Train operator Greater Anglia has unveiled the winners of its £174m civils and building works framework, lining up 18 contractors to deliver station, depot, M&E and painting upgrades across the East Anglia network. The framework, run by Transport UK East Anglia, has been split into four lots under a restricted procedure and covers both lineside and non-lineside assets. As part of the SMP Alliance, we worked with National Highways to deliver the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) programme ahead of schedule. The £390m programme added nearly 140 emergency areas to the road network, improving resilience and safety for 200,000 motorists a day. Costain's Toby Bedford CEng FICE has spoken to New Civil Engineer to explain how they ensured an efficient, on budget delivery ahead of schedule. This included standardising traffic management systems and establishing a kit-of-parts approach to enable consistency across each of the 13 schemes that made up the NEAR programme. The Leighton-First Balfour Joint Venture (LFBJV) held a commencement ceremony earlier this month to mark the start of construction of the Diaphragm-Wall for the upcoming North–South Commuter Railway (NSCR) 03-B project. The milestone event was attended by representatives from the Department of Transportation–Project Management Office (DOTR-PMO), the Greater Capital Railway Consortium–Project Management Office (GCR-PMO), and the LFBJV project management team. The reinforced concrete wall plays a critical role in building the underground component of the FTI Station. Serving as a cut-off wall, it provides essential support and foundational stability during construction. Awarded to LFBJV in 2023, the multi-billion-peso project covers civil engineering, tunnel construction, and building works for a 6.1-kilometer railway segment—comprising 4.7 kilometers of underground and 1.4 kilometers of ground-level structures.
