In broadcast, we often talk about on-screen talent, but it’s the technical talent, the engineers, systems architects, MCR specialists, broadcast IT experts, that keep the signal flowing and the lights on. ⚡📡   Yet, across the industry, I’m seeing the same costly pattern: critical technical roles left vacant for too long. The consequences are more than inconvenient, they can be business-critical.   1. Delays hit live and post-production workflows As IABM research highlights, technical bottlenecks can delay entire productions, increase overtime costs, and limit a broadcaster’s ability to adapt to new formats or delivery platforms which in today's rapidly evolving industry is a big problem.   2. Escalating costs and system vulnerabilities Every week without a skilled engineer or network specialist increases the risk of outages, compliance issues, or expensive last-minute contractors. If there is a gap in a team, every day operations become riskier, and taking daily risks with tech in broadcast isn't ideal!   3. Competitive talent markets move fast Technical broadcast talent( especially those with hybrid skills in IP, cloud playout, and virtualised production) are often hired within days. As SVG Europe reported, broadcasters that take weeks to decide often lose out to competitors with leaner processes.   4. The specialist shortage is real Disguise’s talent survey revealed that over 90% of broadcast companies find it difficult to fill specialist technical roles, with production delays and freelance rates increasing as a direct result.   5. Knock-on effects on innovation A vacant systems engineering role doesn’t just slow BAU, it stalls migrations to IP, delays HDR/4K rollouts, and leaves cloud integration plans gathering dust. As Broadcast Now notes, these delays can be the difference between being a market leader and playing catch-up.   Hiring slowly for a technical role in broadcast isn’t just a staffing problem. It’s a production risk, a security risk, and a commercial risk. If your hiring process for engineers, tech ops, or systems specialists takes months instead of weeks, you’re not just missing candidates, you’re missing opportunities to innovate, protect uptime, and stay ahead. The fix? Build talent pipelines before you need them Streamline decision-making for technical hires Partner with recruiters who understand broadcast tech’s unique demands Because in broadcast engineering, speed matters, not just on air, but in the hiring process too.
