In today’s climate of geopolitical and economic uncertainty, organisations are navigating what we’re calling the ‘Great Hesitation’, where a slowdown in hiring and investment decisions is making employers and jobseekers alike weigh their next move carefully. That's a dramatic jump from just 9% last year, according to recent data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas. This isn't just crisis management; it's the rise of the "CEO gig economy"—a strategic play for companies seeking seasoned talent without the long-term commitment. But there's a serious risk hidden in the numbers. The data shows women are disproportionately hired as interim CEOs, often only to be replaced by men for the permanent role. This threatens to reverse hard-won progress in leadership diversity. In my executive search work across Thailand and Asia, this trend faces a cultural test. My clients rightly prioritize long-term vision and deep relationships—assets that a revolving door of leadership can easily undermine. The trade-offs are stark: • For Executives: A fast-track to prove C-suite value. • For Companies: A gamble on short-term gain vs. long-term trust. • For Diversity: A potential revolving door that stalls gender equity. The smartest boards will use interim roles as a true proving ground, not a stopgap. The key is ensuring these opportunities are a genuine path to permanent leadership, not a dead end.
