After Brexit and the implementation of the Windsor Framework, the MHRA no longer required 2D data matrix codes on medicine packs, prompting some manufacturers to remove them. However, at Accord, we chose to take a more forward-thinking approach. We recognised that many stakeholders in the NHS and supply chain partners had already invested in scanning infrastructure. Anticipating the growing significance of 2D codes for developments like electronic product information (ePI), Accord made the strategic decision to keep 2D codes on all prescription packs. With increasing calls across the industry for their reinstatement, we are proud to have stayed aligned with the needs of the healthcare system. This decision supports greater efficiency in the supply chain and prepares us for the digital future of medicines, including the provision of digital information for patients. Removing 20,000 cars from Britain's roads - that's the equivalent carbon reduction Kimberly-Clark will deliver through innovative hydrogen projects. Northfleet Mill in Kent is one of two UK manufacturing sites for iconic brands like Andrex and Kleenex. Across the UK, these sites produce over one billion toilet rolls and 150 million boxes of tissue each year. 🧻 The reality of heavy industry is that electricity alone cannot meet all operational demands. With existing energy requirements evenly met by electricity and natural gas, Kimberly-Clark has identified green hydrogen as a feasible pathway to decarbonisation using existing gas infrastructure. In July this year, Kimberly-Clark signed a £125m contract to receive green hydrogen from the upcoming Carlton Power facility in Cumbria and the HYRO plant in Kent from 2027. Making this switch will decarbonise around 50% of their natural gas use, accelerating towards their goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030. Kimberly-Clark UK & Ireland has announced a £125 million investment in green hydrogen at its Barrow-in-Furness and Northfleet manufacturing sites. Kimberly-Clark’s partnership with Carlton Power Limited and HYRO, a joint venture between Octopus Energy Generation and RES, aims to reduce natural gas consumption across its UK operations by 50% from 2027. Carlton Power will develop a plant adjacent to Kimberly-Clark's Barrow site, while HYRO will deliver a similar installation at Northfleet. The two sites, which collectively produce nearly one billion Andrex toilet rolls and over 150 million boxes of Kleenex tissues annually, will host dedicated green hydrogen production facilities. Dan Howell, Vice President and Managing Director at Kimberly-Clark UK & Ireland said: “This is a significant investment into a green hydrogen solution, and alongside other investments that support our ambition to move our UK manufacturing operations to 100% renewable energy by 2030.” Both projects were selected under the UK Government’s Hydrogen Production Business Model and Net Zero Hydrogen Fund, part of the Hydrogen Allocation Round One (HAR1) initiative. Planning consent for the Barrow Green Hydrogen facility was granted in June 2023, with approval for the Northfleet scheme following in August 2024. Once operational, the two facilities are expected to supply a combined 147 GWh of hydrogen annually, 100 GWh at Barrow and 47 GWh at Northfleet. The hydrogen will replace natural gas used for steam generation, reducing emissions by 28,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year, equivalent to removing around 20,000 petrol cars from the road. “Our development of the Barrow scheme has been forged through strong partnerships with Kimberly-Clark, our financial partner Schroders Greencoat LLP and with DESNZ as well as with local agencies and stakeholders,” commented Keith Clarke, Founder and Chief Executive of Carlton Power.
