NHS IMPACT has launched operational improvement training, aimed at clinical and operational leads (broadly band 6-8a, or equivalent) across England. The goal is to equip this group with key skills in how to lead and manage thriving teams, the basics of operational management, and how to solve complex problems through improvement. The training consists of a one-day core module in-person, plus a range of pathway-specific modules that are half-day and virtual. All CPD accredited, and totally free for organisations and staff to join. The team will bring the training and facilitators to you, over the course of the next year. This opportunity is open to all Trusts, PCN staff, and those in ICBs or regional teams who work alongside clinical and operational staff. We already have a number of organisations who have been testing this training with us as part of an initial cohort - with lots of good learning and iteration in both content and style of delivery. For those who track the UK or London private patient market, Cleveland Clinic London have just filed their accounts to December 2024. Revenue grew 25% to £185m - getting close to £1m per bed and 10% of the London private market. Pre-tax losses were down slightly to £131m. Deep pockets are needed to enter the London private market at scale.

League tables are back. Will they drive excellence — or risk distorting priorities and harming culture? Yesterday, NHS England published new Trust performance league tables under the NHS Oversight Framework. Transparency and benchmarking can help reduce unwarranted variation that leads to suffering, and support the pursuit of the best possible outcomes and value for patients and communities. But history tells us (remember Blair's star rating system, in a very different financial context?) there are risks: gaming behaviours, a narrow focus on what’s easiest to measure, and negative impacts on morale and culture. What if, instead of being exposed to the risks above, we focused on learning and improving? Imagine league tables that: - Pair data with tailored support and coaching for Trusts facing challenges. - Are co-designed with patients, staff, and clinicians to reflect what truly matters. - Promote curiosity, transparency, and sustainable change — not quick fixes. - Enable cross-learning between those excelling, and those less advanced. League tables can only help if they evolve into learning tables. Helping to ease pressure on A&E while delivering specialist care for cancer patients — that’s the impact of the Cancer Assessment Unit at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, which has just marked its first anniversary. The unit provides rapid, same-day assessments for people experiencing complications from cancer treatment, such as infection, pain or side effects from chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Since opening in April 2024, it has assessed more than 3,000 patients — with only 20% needing hospital admission. Most are safely treated as outpatients, avoiding unnecessary overnight stays and relieving pressure on emergency departments across Barts Health. The unit is now being seen as a benchmark for effective cancer assessment care. It has attracted interest from across the NHS, with several hospital teams from London visiting to learn from the model. It’s a smarter, more compassionate way to care for people when they’re at their most vulnerable — and it’s already making a difference. Could filtering blood remove a toxic substance and protect the kidneys during surgery? Mr James Bennett, a clinical perfusion scientist at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, has received a Kidney Research UK Allied Health Professional Fellowship award. He will look at developing a special type of filter to remove a substance toxic to the kidneys released by red blood cells during some types of surgery. “I hope that my fellowship shows the importance of researching this area of surgery further so that future studies can find ways of preventing patients from developing AKI after aortic surgery.
