Held in Manchester from 16 - 17 July, the UK Space Conference brought together leaders from across the space sector and the wider economy to discuss the role of space in driving the next wave of human technological innovation... The opening plenary, “Space for Growth”, featured UKAEA Executive Director Prof. Rob Buckingham OBE, alongside Dr. Mini Rai (ORBIT RISE LTD), Antonia Y. (UK Space Agency / UKSA), and other thought leaders. Prof. Buckingham highlighted a pivotal shift: “Fusion energy and space are the first sectors being designed for robots, not humans - a fundamental change in engineering.” He explained how radiation challenges in both fusion and space environments make robotic-first design essential - unlocking new opportunities for innovation, safety, and efficiency. UKAEA’s decades of expertise in remote handling for fusion has clear synergies with the emerging space economy - from building and servicing infrastructure to protecting critical assets in orbit. Nick Sykes, Director of RACE, UK Atomic Energy Authority added, “Space and fusion are vital, fast-growing sectors for the UK. Robotics are key enablers, and the UK Space Conference was a great opportunity to explore collaboration and accelerate progress." A giant leap for regional collaboration in the UK space sector. Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, alongside Space East and Westcott Space Cluster, has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the 2025 UK Space Conference, marking a new era of partnership across the East and South East of England. Backed by the UK Space Agency and supported by the Satellite Applications Catapult, this MOU lays the foundation for a Pan Cluster Partnership: a coordinated effort to accelerate innovation, attract investment, and develop skills across the Oxford-Cambridge corridor and beyond. Together, we’re aligning regional strengths to deliver national impact, a shared ambition rooted in the UK’s National Space Strategy.
