How ExxonMobil’s Invention of Butyl Rubber Quietly Changed the World A game-changer was officially born on June 12, 1940, when the U.S. granted the patent for butyl rubber, a breakthrough material invented just a few years earlier by William J. Sparks and Robert M. Thomas at Standard Oil of New Jersey (now ExxonMobil) What started in the lab became one of the most quietly transformative innovations of the 20th century. 🛞 Tires That Hold Air—and Hold Up Butyl rubber’s exceptional air retention revolutionized tire technology and made modern travel safer, longer-lasting, and more efficient—from bicycles to aircraft. 🧪 A Wartime Essential During WWII, when natural rubber supplies were threatened, butyl rubber became a critical material for gas masks, protective gear, and vehicle tires. 🏗️ A Backbone of Industry Its unique blend of impermeability, flexibility, and chemical resistance powers everything from pharmaceutical stoppers and chemical gloves to construction sealants and sports gear. 🎯 A Legacy That Lives On Today, ExxonMobil proudly advances this legacy with products like Exxpro™, bromobutyl, and pharma-grade butyl, helping industries meet evolving demands with precision and performance. Sometimes world-changing innovation doesn’t come with fanfare. It comes with quiet, airtight resilience — like butyl rubber. #ButylRubber #InnovationAnniversary #ExxonMobil #Exxpro #Bromobutyl #PharmaButyl #RubberTechnology #MaterialsScience #OnThisDay #QuietInnovation Photo: Company officials demonstrate the butyl reaction for a Congressional committee
