Last year our team completed 4 million inspections. We have a national team of 600 highly trained and experienced Engineer Surveyors that help our customers comply with a wide range of legislation through independent in-service examinations of plant and machinery. At Zurich Engineering our philosophy is to ensure that we deliver a high quality service that meets customer’s needs whether the inspection is relatively straightforward or complex. We have the technical expertise and experience to handle all types of engineering inspections, both cost effectively and efficiently. This involves all of our Engineer Surveyors having high quality training and document systems thus ensuring that their skills and technical expertise are of the highest quality. As Zurich Engineering’s first female team manager, Paula leads a team of 17 engineer surveyors across London, tackling everything from cranes and boilers to coffee machines. 🚢 Engineering meets heritage on HMS Belfast! Last week, our Engineering team had the privilege of stepping aboard HMS Belfast for a meeting with the The White Ensign Association (The WEA). It was a fantastic opportunity to connect, plan ahead, and through our partnership, explore how we can support military leavers as they transition into civilian careers - whether that's in engineering, financial services, or other exciting roles. At Zurich Engineering - UK our team managers are encouraged to spend time out in the field with team members — a fantastic way to support wellbeing and build stronger working relationships. This week, I had the pleasure of spending the day with Jamie Cain one of our talented Pressure Systems Surveyors. As a Lift and Crane Surveyor myself, I was genuinely impressed by the agility required to climb into and inspect industrial boilers — not for the faint-hearted! It’s always fascinating to gain insight into other disciplines. Thinking about a career in Engineering? We recently welcomed Nigel Emson, our Chief of Staff, to visit the South Wales C08 team in Renishaw, where he got the full Engineering Inspection experience! From inspecting lifts and cranes to checking pressure systems and Local Exhaust Ventilation equipment, Nigel rolled up his sleeves and got involved. He even took a ride on a scissor lift! Nigel was joined by our newest team member, Nathan Steele, who shared what it’s been like starting with us. It was a great reminder of the fresh talent and energy we’re bringing into the business. A big thank you to Byron, Darren, Dan, Gavin, and Nathan for making it a memorable day. And, of course, thanks to Nigel for his enthusiasm and curiosity. Ever been stuck in one of the UK’s 300,000 lifts? A fifth could be out of service if faults aren’t addressed. Monday mornings as as Pressure Systems Engineer Surveyor don't get much better than this. Another great land mark visited while carrying out my role. After a successful application, I was fortunate to spend a week’s work experience with Zurich Engineering - UK to learn more about the Engineering Surveying industry. This involved 2 days of technical workshops lead by Senior Engineers focusing on pressure systems and Lift and crane machinery. For pressure systems I learnt about non-destructive testing techniques such as ultrasounds to check for internal flaws by measuring variations in wall thickness. Then we moved on to joining techniques and welds such as fillet welds, butt welds and flanged joints because cracks usually propagate from the toe of a weld. I gained knowledge about plant ageing and real-life applications of the bathtub curve followed by making calculations to assess the acceptability of faults. This was helpful to tie in what I’ve learnt in the first year of my degree to real scenarios. The following day was spent learning about both traction and hydraulic lifts (direct and indirect) and learning to calculate traction equations as well as the theory behind destination control systems. The most exciting part of the week was the two days spent in the field with an engineering surveyor. Nigel Welch showed myself and Malak Hadj Zoubir around some commercial pressure systems in central London as well as the largest V12 engines I’ve ever seen being used as backup generators for the high rises. The final day involved a visit to a paper mill to view an industrial pressure system where checks were being carried out on their furnaces which were used to produce steam for the mill itself. We had a tour of the mill where we saw all the machinery in action as well as the control room and conveyance systems. It was an extremely interesting and educational week so thank you to my host Marina Kinsey and everyone else at Zurich.
