Jamie Wyeth recently acquired a sixty-foot wide mural by his grandfather, beloved painter N.C. Wyeth, now on display at his Chadds Ford farm.

A massive N.C. Wyeth painting is staying in the family thanks to a recent display by Jamie Wyeth, reports Tim Furlong for NBC10 Philadelphia.

Jamie Wyeth, son of Andrew Wyeth, recently acquired a sixty-foot wide and nineteen-foot tall mural by his grandfather, famed painter N.C. Wyeth. The mural now hangs at a newly-constructed barn at Wyeth’s farm in the Brandywine Valley.

WSFS Bank commissioned N.C. Wyeth to paint the mural at the height of the Great Depression. The intricate painting shows images of family and community to uplift bank customers at the time.

The mural hung above the teller’s desk for over seventy-five years. When the building was sold, the painting was rolled up and stayed in storage for years.

Many local museums showed an interest in the mural, but none had a space large enough to accommodate it.

But Jamie Wyeth had the means to house the iconic mural and give the work the space it deserves.

He constructed a round, professionally-lit barn to display the work. The curved walls of the space allows the viewer to take in the painting all at once instead of walking from side to side to see every detail.

In a collaboration with the Brandywine Museum of Art, leadership hopes to eventually allow for tours of the space later this fall.

On the personal side, Jamie Wyeth shared that he never gets tired of looking at the stunning mural. About having his grandfather’s work so close to home, Wyeth said, “It’s part of the history of my family, which I’m very, very proud of.”
