Paoli Couple Restores Collection of Rarest Comic Books in Country
Emily and Matt Meyers, a Paoli couple recognized by comic book collectors, recently restored 200 of the nation’s rarest comic books, writes Nina Starner for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The pair began restoring comic books in 2013, after Matt discovered comic restoration while selling his own collection. Last month, they worked on the True North Collection, 200 comics from a previously private collection of rare first character appearances and first edition comics, at the request of an unnamed Canadian collector.
The comics are from the so-called “Golden Age,” published between 1930 and 1940.
“Everyone was all abuzz about this early Batman comic and how beautiful this restoration was,” said the anonymous seller.
The couple show such expertise that they even got accused of faking it by the most influential comic book grading company in the world, Certified Guaranty. They filed a defamation lawsuit and won, receiving a $10 million award last year.
“There was skepticism early on about the high grades our books would achieve since that was fairly uncommon in the industry,” said Emily Meyers. “Our books achieve the high grades because we work on them until they are as perfect as we can possibly make them.”
