Stunning Home of Famed Local Designer Listed for Sale in Willistown
The stunning home of famed Philadelphia-area architectural designer Robert McElroy is now up for sale in Willistown, writes Michael Tanenbaum for PhillyVoice.
McElroy designed numerous mid-century modernist homes throughout the Philadelphia suburbs from the 1950s through the 1980s. A naturalist, many McElroy homes incorporate the surrounding landscape and local nature.
Now, his own home, which he built for his family in 1975, is on the market for $1.99 million.
The 4,348 square foot house, situated outside Malvern, features sharp rooftops, sculptural interiors, and exposed woodwork throughout. Lush greenery can be seen through floor-to-ceiling windows, making the space both peaceful and artistic.
Inside, a spiral staircase leads to a built-in bookshelf. Intricate woodworking by Horace Hartshaw makes gives the scenic home a unique twist.
An Upper Darby native, Robert McElroy began his career repairing row homes. In the following years, he began designing and building homes throughout the suburbs in his own unique style, including properties in Bryn Mawr, Conshohocken, and around Valley Forge National Historical Park.
McElroy, who passed last year at age 97, built many homes on hillsides or other difficult terrain. With his wife Anna Maria, McElroy lived at the property for years, raising his children there.
Listing agent Marion Dinofa shared that like many McElroy homes, the scenic Malvern property is made to last and will serve its next inhabitants for years to come.
