Elon Musk's US satellite internet company, Starlink, has kick-started its first round of hiring in India with plans to conduct technical and security demonstrations in Mumbai before commencing commercial operations in the country.

The demo runs, scheduled for October 30-31, aimed to showcase preparedness before law enforcement and security officials, utilising the interim spectrum allotted to the business in order to exhibit compliance with India's regulatory standards, as per news agency PTI.

According to officials, this is a crucial pre-launch stage in obtaining final authorisations for the country's satellite broadband services.

Why Demonstration Runs Matter

The demonstration runs of the SpaceX-owned company are an essential part of its rollout in India. They are intended particularly to show that Starlink complies with technical and security standards set forth by the ‘Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite’ (GMPCS) authorisation regime.

Satellite-based internet services pose unique risks (e.g., interception, data sovereignty, encryption and surveillance), according to security agencies and the Indian regulator, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Therefore, such in-country trial runs are now required before a complete commercial rollout.

With a system of 7,578 satellites, Musk's Starlink is the leading satcom operator in the world. Currently, India has granted the required approvals for Starlink, Reliance Jio-SES JV and Eutelsat OneWeb, which is supported by the Bharti Group, to deliver satcom services in the country.

India has recently witnessed the entry of over 10 satellite providers, including the licensed Starlink, and the private sector is allowed to hold up to 100% FDI.

Starlink Hiring for Finance and Accounting Roles

According to job postings on the SpaceX careers page and LinkedIn, Starlink is seeking applicants for finance and accounting positions, such as tax manager, senior treasury analyst, accounting manager, and payments manager, as part of its first hiring campaign. All positions are based in Bengaluru, the operational hub of Starlink in India.

The post further stated that the Bengaluru-based position will be in charge of developing and expanding accounting, reporting, and statutory compliance capabilities to support Starlink's operations in India.

“As Starlink expands its global footprint to deliver its low-latency satellite broadband services worldwide, its Indian subsidiary is looking to hire an accounting manager to oversee financial reporting and compliance,” SpaceX said.

The company added that there are no remote or hybrid work options available and that only locally based candidates with appropriate work permission will be considered.

Starlink is hiring in preparation for a late 2025 or early 2026 commercial launch in India. The business has begun demonstrating security to law enforcement and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to obtain final clearance.

Starlink Leased Its First Office Space in Mumbai’s Chandivali

Starlink has applied for approval to set up 9 to 10 gateway earth stations around India, including in Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Lucknow, as part of its network infrastructure strategy. Mumbai will act as a hub for the company's initial rollout, and it currently has three ground stations there.

The company has committed to establishing its operations in India by leasing its first office space in the Chandivali neighbourhood of Mumbai. According to property documents obtained through Propstack, Starlink Satellite Communications Private Ltd. has leased 1,294 square feet of space on the ground floor of the Boomerang commercial building in Chandivali.
