Cookies, Ads and Emails
This Cookie Notice (“Notice”) explains how Dell and our technology providers, including our service providers and analytics and advertising providers, use cookies and other similar tracking technologies to collect information from your browser or device (some of which is considered “personal information”) when you access and use our websites, video and chat features, applications, email communications, surveys, newsletters, and other online and app-based products and services (our “Sites and Services”). This Notice applies to Sites and Services that link to this Notice.
This Notice also provides details about how to manage your choices with respect to cookies and other similar technologies, and forms part of Dell’s Privacy Statement.
What are cookies and similar technologies and how are they used?
Cookies. Cookies are small text files placed by a website and stored by your browser on your device. A cookie can later be read when your browser connects to a web server in the same domain that placed the cookie. The text in a cookie contains a string of numbers and letters that may uniquely identify your device and can contain other information as well. This allows the web server to recognize your browser over time, each time it connects to that web server.
Clear GIFs, Pixel Tags and Other Technologies. These technologies are tiny graphics with a unique identifier, similar in function to cookies. In contrast to cookies, which are stored on your computer’s hard drive, clear GIFs are embedded invisibly on web and application pages. We may use clear GIFs (a.k.a. web beacons or pixel tags), in connection with our Sites and Services to, among other things, record and track the activities of website visitors and application users, help us manage content, and compile statistics about website usage. We and our providers also use clear GIFs in HTML e-mails to our customers, to help us track e-mail response rates, and identify when our e-mails are viewed.
How does Dell classify the cookies and similar technologies that it uses?
Dell Sites and Services use cookies and similar technologies that fall into the following categories:
- Essential Cookies and similar technologies are necessary for our Sites and Services to function properly and securely. These cookies are necessary for our Sites and Services to function properly, such as by providing secure log-in, allowing images to load, or allowing you to select your cookie preferences. This category of cookies cannot be disabled. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but doing so means some parts of the Sites and Services will not work.
- Marketing Cookies and similar technologies are used to understand user behavior over time and across our websites. These cookies are also used to target and show ads that are more relevant to your interests (for more information, please see “Targeted Advertising and Emails” below). We may share your personal information with advertising platforms to help us display the most relevant messages to you. These cookies may also store information on user behavior obtained through their browsing habits across our Sites and Services and other websites, applications, and services, which allows us to develop a specific profile, target, and display advertisements appropriate to your profile.
- Statistical Cookies and similar technologies help us understand how visitors interact with our website by collecting and reporting information. The information collected by means of this type of cookie is used to measure activity on our Sites and Services so that we can improve them by analyzing the data regarding the service use.
How do we and our providers use cookies and similar technologies?
We, and our technology, analytics and advertising providers, use these technologies in our Sites and Services to collect, record, or generate information (such as the pages you visit, the links you click on, how you navigate our Sites and Services, and similar usage information, identifiers, and device information) when you access and use our Sites and Services. Some of this information is personal information. We also collect information about your online activities over time and across different websites or online services. We use this information to store your preferences and settings, provide chat features and video content on our Sites and Services, enable you to sign-in, analyze and measure how our Sites and Services perform, record and understand your interaction with the Sites and Services, develop inferences, tailor and deliver interest-based advertising, combat fraudulent or illegal activity, secure our Sites and Services, and fulfill our other legitimate purposes. We and/or our providers also disclose the information we collect or infer with other providers for these purposes. For more information about the analytics and advertising partners providers collect personal information on our services, please review the “Whom we share your information with” section of the Dell Privacy Statement.
Choice and Control of Personal Information
See the “Your Data Subject Rights” section of the Dell Privacy Statement applicable to your region for more details about exercising your data subject rights via Dell’s Privacy Request Portal.
In addition, there are a range of controls available through browsers, mobile operating systems, and elsewhere. Such mechanisms include:
Browser and Platform Controls:
- Cookie controls. Most web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you prefer, you can go to your browser settings to learn how to delete or reject cookies. If you choose to delete or reject cookies, this could affect certain features or services of our Sites and Services. If you choose to delete cookies, settings and preferences controlled by those cookies, including advertising preferences, may be deleted and may need to be recreated.
Additionally, you can manage your preferences (including opting out from targeted advertising and, for California visitors, managing your “do not sell or share” options described here) via our Privacy Center (our Consent Management Platform) or use provider-specific opt-out mechanisms. For example, we use Google Analytics on our website to help us understand how users interact with our website. You can opt out using the Google Analytics Opt-Out. We use YouTube API services to integrate video functionality into our Sites and Services. You can access the YouTube Terms of Service here and Google (YouTube)’s Privacy Policy here. Additionally, you can opt out from Chartbeat at https://static.chartbeat.com/opt-out.html, and Comscore at https://www.scorecardresearch.com/optout.aspx?newlanguage=1 - Global Privacy Control. Some browsers and browser extensions support the “Global Privacy Control” (GPC) or similar controls that can send a signal to the websites you visit indicating your choice to opt-out from certain types of data processing, including data sales and/or targeted advertising, as specified by applicable law. When we detect such a signal, we will make reasonable efforts to respect your choices indicated by a GPC setting or similar control that is recognized by regulation or otherwise widely acknowledged as a valid opt-out preference signal.
- Mobile advertising ID controls. iOS and Android operating systems provide options to limit tracking and/or reset the advertising IDs.
- Do Not Track. Some browsers include a "Do Not Track" (DNT) setting that can send a signal to the websites you visit indicating you do not wish to be tracked. Unlike the GPC described above, there is not a common understanding of how to interpret the DNT signal; therefore, our websites do not respond to browser DNT signals. Instead, you can use the range of other tools to control data collection and use, including the GPC, cookie controls, and advertising controls described above.
- Email web beacons. Most email clients have settings that allow you to prevent the automatic downloading of images, including web beacons, and the automatic connection to the web servers that host those images.
- Opting-Out of Cross-Device Use. We and our providers, including Google, may use the information that we collect about you (whether directly from our website, from our mobile applications, through your device(s), or from a third party) to help us and our third party service providers identify other devices that you use (e.g., a mobile phone, tablet, other computer, etc.). We and our providers also may use the cross-device use and other information we learn about you to serve targeted advertising on your devices and to send you emails. To opt-out of cross-device advertising, you may follow the instructions set forth in the “Directly Opting Out with Advertising Providers” section below. Please note: if you opt-out of these personalized advertising cookies, your opt-out will be specific to the web browser, application, or device from which you accessed the opt-out. If you use multiple devices or web browsers, you will need to opt-out each browser or device that you use.
Directly Opting-Out with Advertising Providers:
- Our Users in the United States can use the controls offered by the organizations our advertising providers may participate in to opt out of targeted advertising. Please refer to the Targeted Ads and Emails section of this Notice for more information. You may also go to the Network Advertising Initiative ("NAI") Consumer Opt-Out Page for information about opting out of interest-based advertising and their choices regarding having information used by NAI members.
- Our Users in Canada and Europe can use the targeted advertising opt-out controls offered by the organizations our advertising partners may participate in, which you can access at:
- Canada: Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada (https://youradchoices.ca/)
- Europe: European Digital Advertising Alliance (http://youronlinechoices.com/)
Opting out from one or more companies listed on the NAI Consumer Opt-Out Page will opt you out from those companies' delivery of targeted advertising, including interest-based content or ads to you, but it does not mean you will no longer receive any advertising through our Sites and Services. You may continue to receive advertisements, for example, based on the particular website that you are viewing (i.e., contextually based ads). Also, if your browsers are configured to reject cookies when you attempt to exercise your right to opt out on the NAI website, your opt out may not be effective. Additional information is available on the NAI's website at https://www.thenai.org.
Targeted Advertising and Emails
Dell and our providers may use personal information about your use of the Dell Sites and Services, as well as other sites and services. The information could include pages you visit, the items you view or place in your shopping cart, your responses to our ads and emails, and inferences or predictions about your interests based on your activities over time. This information allows us to make the Dell ads you see more relevant to you and your interests. This is referred to as targeted advertising (also known as “interest-based advertising”). For example, if you recently looked at laptops online, you may be more likely to see an advertisement regarding a Dell laptop. For this purpose, Dell has selected partners who are members of self-regulatory associations such as the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) and the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI).
To enable you to opt-out of targeted advertising delivered by providers working with Dell, or to customize your experience on Dell websites, you have several options:
- Visit Dell’s Privacy Center and click on “Manage Your Cookies” to manage your cookie preferences;
- Manage your preferences using controls presented via a cookie banner on the page you are visiting;
- Use the browser or device controls described above;
- Opt out directly with advertising providers (as described above).
If you opt-out using any of these mechanisms, you may still see Dell ads on Dell websites and other websites, but those ads will not be tailored to your interests by Dell or our partners.
Dell will continue to customize your experience on Dell websites via our use of cookies. For more information on how Dell uses cookies and how to manage your cookie settings via your browser, please visit our Privacy Statement.
Please note that if you clear, disable, or remove cookies, or if you use a different browser or device, you may need to reset your opt-out selections. If you disable or remove cookies, some parts of the Sites and Services may not function properly. Information may still be collected and used for other purposes, such as for our internal operations and to remember your opt-out preferences.
