About The Author

T he book is based on the true story of Thovhedzo Richwoman and her journey to get to the top of the South African mining industry (rock engineering), and the segregation she faced from white examiners and white bosses until she decided that the world had to stop burying its head in the sand and pretending that racism was a thing of the past in the rainbow nation.

As a young girl growing up in a village in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, Thovhedzo started dreaming about working in the mines, where she believed her answer to getting a lot of money lay. She managed to do that through hard work. She passed her grade 12 examinations and managed to get a scholarship to study mining engineering at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. At the end of her tenure at university, she got to work for one of the big mining companies in South Africa, and from there, she started experiencing a life she thought had gone with the coming of independence in 1994.

Thovhedzo aspired to become a rock engineer, and to get certified, she needed to write certain examinations. As she went through this, she discovered that the colour of her skin played a big part in whether or not she would pass the exams. In addition to that, she also discovered that although many blacks were working hard at university to get degrees and get good jobs in the mining industry, those with white colour of skin had an easier ticket to those same positions—tickets born not from hard work at university or any other college but merely by the colour of their skin.

The book highlights the stages Thovhedzo went through to achieve what she set out to achieve and takes the reader through the different experiences she experienced in her life in her endeavour to get to the top. It shows us the frustrations she went through from continuously being failed in exams and not being awarded passes for exams initially passed. Her dreams were crushed by the oppressors through an organised network of diplomatic racism scheme. Over time, she found herself imprisoned in hatred, resentment, low confidence, bitterness, and confusion.

It takes us through the journey God took her as he taught her to forgive those she believed had wronged her until she got an unexpected victory from her pains.

The lesson she learned, besides endurance and forgiveness, was that people still pretended there were no race issues in South Africa, and this was what made her decide to highlight what she faced in the mining industry.

Thovhedzo Richwoman wrote the book to:

• raise an awareness in the mining industry about racism and how it destroys the careers of young black professionals and hopefully get the attention from the right authorities to resolve the problem

• create a platform for individuals suffering from racism to speak out so that the issue can be addressed

• encourage transformation and make rock engineering equally accessible to both black and white people

• encourage the readers to dream and follow their dreams regardless of failure and obstacles along the way

• help her accept her painful experience—that there is nothing she can do to change what happened

• make something good out of the
