About this ebook
Mark Buchignani, a forty-year video game industry veteran (twenty-five as a hiring manager), explains how to put your best foot forward in landing that first game job and what to expect after you do.
Mark Buchignani
My novels shine light on current-day society by presenting normal people who find themselves in unexpected, offbeat, or abnormal circumstances – circumstances replete with threatened or actual upheaval. The choices these folks make move the action forward and expose brokenness in the culture and in the actors themselves.

What's Wrong With This Resume? - Mark Buchignani
Acknowledgements
First and foremost, I would like to thank David Schwartz, who has been a long-standing associate and friend, someone I have both collaborated with and hung out with at industry events. Good guy, thoughtful guy, easy to talk to. I appreciate his willingness to introduce this volume and to add his insight both in his piece and in proofreading the text. Thanks, Dave.
More generally, I would like to express my appreciation for the professors and administration of all the universities I have visited over the years. Their interest and drive have helped shape this material as much as I have, as have students through their questions, both during my campus visits and remote presentations and via email. Thank you, everyone.

Introducing the Introducer before the Introduction
I’ve been doing this
for quite a while, but Mark’s been doing it even longer. He’s worked in the game industry, advising, recruiting, and all kinds of stuff I don’t do as an academic. A teacher can only go so far, even if they actively develop their stuff – we’re just not in the business of running a business. And so, many of us, especially those offering game degrees, lean on industry contacts, partly for networking, but also for knowledge. Do we really know what we’re preparing students to do? Mark’s one of the vital industry veterans who’s been there to help.
I’ve gotten to know him through meetings, talks, emails, and even more meetings – and lots and lots of feedback. If you choose to read this document, I expect you want to know more about breaking into the game industry. It’s not easy, and despite whatever you hear, I don’t think it will be easy. Perhaps your favorite search engine found some articles. Something on the Internet must be true, right? I’ve spent almost fifteen years inventing and reinventing my path in advising and teaching students about games based on not knowing the answers. Mark’s one of the people I turn to for those answers. He’s an industry professional I’ve come to trust because he’s a straight shooter who focuses on student success.
As someone invested in making games in a technical capacity combined with recruiting, Mark’s one of the rare recruiters I’ve met who zeros in on a student’s immediate potential. He’s spent years learning about academic game programs and successfully recruited many into the industry. I’ve even tried recruiting him to academia, but we have this stuff called snow
here in Rochester. Mark loves where he is; if I had more time out west, I’d be asking him to show me various bike routes and trails.
