Formal To Slang - 3 Levels of Fluency
()
About this ebook
- Your French is too academic and lacks naturalness?
- When you listen to native French speakers you have big problems understanding them?
- You struggle to understand films and series without subtitles?
All native French speakers switch between 3 levels of language on a daily basis, automatically. The more you master the language, the more you are able to use these 3 levels of language adaptively, that is, to choose the level of language correctly.
Basic words are very important but saying bicyclette instead of vélo simply doesn't sound natural. If your language is too formal, you will appear pretentious and you will not always be understood. On the contrary, if your language is too informal, you will give the impression of lacking education or you will disrespect your interlocutor!
That's why I decided to gather the most common slang words that can be used in daily spoken French. Moreover you will be able to compare with the neutral and formal equivalent. I'm sure this will help you to save a lot of awkwardness and be more confident using French!
What you will find is this book:
- 300 sentences comparing different levels of speech
- 150 slang words
- 100 audios mp3
- 100 exercices sentences

The French...Why Do They Speak So Fast?
Foreword
Dear French learners,
I lead students from beginners to advanced and since I teach French I realize how much learners struggle when it comes to having a natural speech and blend in with French natives. Most learners feel like they speak like a book - and they are right! Daily spoken French is indeed completely different from French from a book. The big issue is that it’s hard to write books about spoken French since books are...written French.
For a French native, a book is not real speech and we all know this. As soon as you write something, it is not spoken anymore. Written French has rules (grammar and spelling) and we cannot misspell it without being judged by our pairs. If you spent some time in France, you might have noticed that there is also a trend to have hypercorrection.
Many of you need more vocabulary to express your ideas. Basic words are very important but saying bicyclette instead of vélo simply doesn’t sound natural.
That’s why I decided to gather the most common slang (informal) words that can be used in daily spoken French. Moreover you will be able to compare with the neutral and formal equivalent. I’m sure this will help you to save a lot of awkwardness and be more confident using French!
Eventually, if you are really interested in speech differences, levels of speech and vocabulary, I suggest the famous book of Raymond Queneau Exercice de style
. It is a story told 99 times (!) with a different style. You will like it.
