Chapter One
SINCE I WAS YOUNG, my parents taught me that the scary monsters in my closet or under my bed were only in my imagination and couldn't hurt me unless I believed in them. They often told me stories about a boy who thought monsters were chasing him from under his bed, but it turned out they were just his toys. However, one day I realized that monsters weren't just make-believe; they existed.
I was in my bedroom in our new house, which seemed forever dark. The silence pervaded the room, aggravated my ears, and made me feel more alone than ever. I could see the night sky through the window and wished I could fly up, following the stars to somewhere more fun. I stood up, walked over to the window, and peered at the starry sky; a sudden calm enraptured me. The vastness of the universe was both humbling and awe-inspiring. I felt small and insignificant but also connected to something much larger than myself. The stars twinkled at me as if they welcomed me into their world. I took a deep breath and smiled. I was no longer alone.
I then heard it.
There was a scratching noise from my closet, so I opened it and pulled back the few dresses hanging there. To my surprise, behind them was a massive, pulsing shape! It was too dark to see, but I knew it was looking at me. Suddenly, the figure moved closer and closer. Then—with a jolt that made my heart jump into my throat—the creature reached out its massive hand and grabbed mine; its ice-cold fingers closed around mine! My eyes widened, and adrenaline shot through every vein in my body as I screamed, which startled my parents into entering the room.
What's the matter, honey?
My mom asked as my dad looked through the closet.
I saw a monster!
I shrieked, pointing at the closet. There was a hand in there!
My parents looked at me, then back to the closet. My mother put her arm around me, and I wept as she gently rocked me. There's nothing in there, honey,
she said calmly. It must have been a shadow.
I shook my head. No!
I said, the tears painting down my cheeks. I saw a hand! It grabbed mine!
My mother frowned and looked up at my father, who shrugged, then walked over to the closet and pulled open the door again. He turned on the light, which shone brightly into the dark space—but he insisted there was nothing inside except my clothes, some boxes, and my stuffed animal. Look, honey. It's just your stuffed bunny, Hops,
my dad told me.
I knew better.
I had not been mistaken. There was an enormous creature in my closet, eyes luminescent, as it squirmed around on the floor of the tiny space. Its fleshy body was searching for something—or someone. Still, my parents didn't believe me because they couldn't see it from where they stood. I wasn't sure how they could miss it. The creature was a giant, far more giant than my father. Its eyes were glowing red orbs as it stared at me from behind my parents' backs; then I understood what the thing wanted: me! I wanted to scream, but no sound would come from my throat. I tried to run away, but my legs were frozen in place. Everything happened so fast that it felt like a dream—a nightmare.
They told me to go back to bed because I had been going through some tough things for someone so young. My grandma had just died, and I was constantly picked on at my old school. With my dad getting a new job, we moved to this town—a fresh start for everyone. The move was a lot for me to take in at once, and I felt overwhelmed, especially since I found a monster in my closet the first night; this wasn’t the fresh start I was looking for.
Closing the closet door, my parents tucked me back into bed and left the room. And with the sheets covering half my face, my heart was pounding in my chest. My eyes stayed transfixed on the doorknob. I expected it to turn at any moment. And if it did, I would scream bloody murder until my parents came running back in again. I lay there for an eternity, wondering what the monster would do to me if he opened the closet. Every little creak and sound the house made filled me with terror, as I knew the monster could come at any moment.
Nothing happened.
Finally, my heart slowed, and I fell
