The Talk S5: Starting The Conversation

Real stories. First conversations. How four people found the courage to talk about their HIV diagnosis.

For this episode of Plus’ video series, The Talk, we sit down with four inspiring individuals to discuss how they prepared for their first conversations after being diagnosed with HIV.

“The first thing that came to mind was, 'Oh goodness! How am I going to tell my mom?” Elena Linas, a sexual health advocate and public health specialist, reflected on the moment she first learned of her diagnosis.

For many people newly diagnosed with HIV, one of the most immediate challenges is disclosure — deciding how, when, and with whom to share their status. It’s a deeply personal process that often comes with a mix of fears, uncertainty, and emotional weight.

“It’s not something that comes easy,” said Linas.

There are some talks in life that we all have — about love, about sex, about the moments that reshape our lives. For those newly diagnosed with HIV, the conversation with a doctor, or with loved ones, can feel like one of the hardest to begin. But what if that talk didn’t have to be so intimidating?

In this new season of The Talk, four powerful episodes highlight the lived experiences of a diverse group of people living with HIV. They open up about their first conversations with healthcare providers, friends, and family — offering perspective, encouragement, and a reminder that no one has to navigate this journey alone.
