We need to be cautious in review and refinement of metrics as departments/teams often reduce targets to achieve them sooner, while it is a good practice to refine metrics, I feel it’s extremely important to - 1. Have automated workflows to manage governance around managing targets against each performance metric in scorecards. 2. Have AI/ML/Rule-based anomaly detections for flagging repeated achievement of targets with constantly declining targets, as these scenarios flag the possibility of diminishing ambition.

Check if different items that propose to measure the same general construct produce similar scores. Common methods include Cronbach’s alpha and split-half reliability. Continuously review the metrics and their performance. Adjust and refine them based on feedback and new insights.

All in all, these metrics should benefit stakeholders, so while the team performs they have cheerleaders on the side- lines. Few thoughts from my side. 1. What behavior will they drive, individualistic or team driven? What is required on this case? 2. If the behavior falls in place, does it drive positive measurable goals, both short term and long term? What is my horizon here? 3. How do they affect the bottom-line? Do I have to budget the payout or they will pump up the bottom-line? 4. Are they simple enough that all concerned can wrap their heads around it and spread easily through formal and informal channels. 5. How will they be paid, in multiple sprints, doses or deferred timelines? What is the rationale?

For a long time in business, we used to have a "phase one" to plan, a "phase two" to act. As we know, this is not a reality anymore. So (1) get strategic in your business analytics and insights efforts, (2) work on the "data trade-offs" keeping your eyes on the essential and leaving what brings more "challenges" than answers and (3) keep faith!
