Leading a high-pressure team, how do you safeguard your personal time without sacrificing accessibility?

Been there, done that. My takeaways: 1) boundaries make you a better leader and 2) you must learn how and when to say "NO". I’m transparent about my schedule. My team knows exactly when I’m available and when I’m not. At Phoenix Virtual Solutions, we also have a system that lets our team know, like, hey, I’m available at this time in this timezone, or when we're out of office and taking a day off. My team also knows when I’m reachable. But I always set aside specific times in my day dedicated to checking in with the team. So they rarely feel the need to interrupt personal time unless it’s urgent. Leading under pressure doesn’t mean always being on but being consistently available and fully present when you are.

This question hits home. I used to think being a good leader meant always being available, saying yes even when I was stretched thin. I didn’t want to let anyone down. But I’ve learned that when I give from a place of burnout, I’m not really giving my best. The team gets a version of me that’s distracted, tired, and reactive. Now, I try to be more intentional. I block thinking time, protect family moments, and remind myself that saying no or “not right now” doesn’t make me less committed—it makes me more present when it counts. For example, if crunching numbers is your strength and 1 of 3 tasks you have involve it, delegate the other two. From the other two, delegate to two different people depending on their strengths. Doing it this way lessens pressure.

However, you cannot get to the next level on optimism alone. You must take action to bring your vision to life, and make it a reality.
