This great team-building activity opens up your technology and processes in a creative atmosphere while providing new insights and energy to your workplace. Here's a small concrete baseline to start: Set aside a Thursday and Friday for the hackathon. The more you trust your people, the more open-ended you should make the hackathon (ie. let people choose and drive the topics themselves.) Begin the kickoff on Thursday morning and allow 24 hours for experimentation. On Friday morning, there is a presentation round and everyone gets smarter together.
