What are some of the applications and domains of GIS in crime and security?

Hot Spot Analysis on crime data involves utilizing the powerful analytical tools that GIS provides to find the spatial distribution and concentration of certain classes or types of crimes, it’s frequency of occurrence and mapping its spatial distribution. A highly concentrated zone of certain classes of crime will render those areas as hotspots of those crimes and further reasons or explanations can be given to its occurrence based on the data gathered at the time.

Indeed GIS is prowefull tool to analyse pattern and do lot of other historical crime behaviour output. However as technology emirging to do lot more, what was a dream just decades ago. An automatic vehicle location (AVL) tracks the location of all GPS-equipped fleet units in real time, identifies the closest officer for backup, or optimizes response times. Geographic profiling can solve several high-profile crimes. It is applied to the analysis of series/repeated crimes.

The locations can be captured using mobile apps for incident reporting, public apps or geocoding of FIR address. The analysis can be based on time of crimes, season, modus operandi, active gangs in the location, socio economic profile wise location, police station wise crime Patterns and hotspots based on type of crime, severity of crime, density of crimes. The real time crime capture can be based on integration of camera APIs and then the analysis of the crime patterns. The analysis may help in Decision support system.

by identifying the crime mapping aspects into two parts of low enforcement agencies and the researchers we initiate major parts of the governmental side by using data collection, visualization, hot spot analyzing by GIS then predictive policing and last but not least for community engagement. I have previuosly advised on a student's project on how to handle ATM crime to a certain degree of pridictability by mapping incident hotspots and overlaying with other data , such as security patrol levels, neighborhood analyses, location vulnerabilities, and other economic status indicators.
