"If I could improve one thing what would it be?" Secondly, ask your manager "If you could hire an additional person today what are three things you would like for them to do." Another way to ask "If there were two of you how would that make your day less stressful." Both of these questions will get your manager to openly speak about things that are challenging them. This will allow you to offer a solution that adds more responsibility to your duties. Bonus, you will be demonstrating problem resolution, leadership, and ways for you to demonstrate your strengths.

They have other direct reports, their own workload and their own development to take care of as well so don’t be too hard on them if they forgot something, just remind them.
