Networking in my career has honestly been a game-changer. At times I may have had the right skillset and knowledge that was needed to help me grow in a particular role however until I was intentional with meeting people who were doing the roles or in the spaces or industries that I wanted to be in , things slowed down for me. If it’s an industry where there are few women in leadership, it can feel confusing how to cut into all that maleness. Continuously building relationships and leading by example, bringing other women along with you. Joining professional associations, taking up opportunities for development and putting your hand up to join projects outside of your own business unit. Get good at asking questions like “what are you passionate about right now” who doesn’t like to talk about that. Find out who the go to people are in your organisation or sector and get to know them. It is the quality of what you do or achieve together that may increase the representation in leadership.

If you have the skill set and patience to be a mentor, then do it! Your profession needs those like you to ensure growth and development for the future. Make sure you give yourself and your mentee room to make mistakes and grow. If you’re not cut out for mentorship and are unable to develop the skills and tolerance to develop others, it’s best that you exert yourself to support others that do. The actions of “bad-mentorship” can have terrible repercussions not just in the personal life of those involved but in the profession as a whole.
