How can you meet deadlines without sacrificing quality in automotive manufacturing?

I've heard it said before, "those who fail to plan, plan to fail". This is very true when jumping into projects, quality campaigns, etc. Establish SMART goals and be realistic with expectations on the front end and always have a contingency plan. Like many other PMs, I like to set milestones for the activity so I can track progress against target. This helps to expose bottlenecks, delays, roadblocks, etc. early on rather than discovering you're not going to meet the target adoption date as promised at the end. Delays add more opportunity for problems to arise and often lead to cutting corners to meet the "urgent" deadline. So Plan to "get ahead" of these pitfalls by pivoting resources when your activity drifts off.

Develop a detailed project plan outlining each step of the manufacturing process, ensuring sufficient time for quality checks and adjustments.

Make quality a non-negotiable aspect of the manufacturing process. Allocate resources and time with a focus on maintaining high standards.

"Always think of the Customer first..." This is rule number one. Our livelihood depends on maintaining Trust with our customers and delivering to them the highest quality possible. It's easy to get on the Gemba and worry about downtime, cost reduction initiatives, and project timelines. However every action must align with delivering quality to the customer. If I had 48hrs in the day and an army of employees (not realistic), then I could do everything, but in reality, resource allocation is one glaring problem in my industry. How we manage our resources impacts not only the bottom line but also the quality we deliver. Hence, I often recommend to re-focus on what "matters the most to the customer" and do more "for the customer" with less.

I am a minimalist of sorts and I hate to waste time. I think many would agree. However when I fill out endless documents, send reminder emails, populate data table after data table, and remake the same charts and graphs over and over again, I can't help but wish for a magic button that I could press to get the busy work done. DING! That's were process automation tools like "Power Automate" come into play. If you find yourself doing the same tasks repetitively, then those tasks may be a prime candidate to build some automation tools for. This will potentially optimize your time, freeing you up to add more value elsewhere. The same is true for the Gemba where Robotic processes are becoming more prevalent.
