We posed this question to the 2025 Educators of the Year from our four technical universities, and their responses are as inspiring as they are diverse. Across disciplines, faculties and institutions, their letters share a common thread: teaching is still very much a human endeavour. For these celebrated educators, their profession is about curiosity, connection, and creating space for students to grow. From embracing uncertainty, to nurturing enthusiasm, to finding joy in everyday learning moments, their reflections offer valuable encouragement for anyone beginning their journey in academia. They also remind us how much strong education matters for those who will shape tomorrow’s technology. The 4TU.Design United Research School is a joint initiative to deliver high-quality PhD-level education and cultivate a vibrant, collaborative community of design researchers across the Netherlands.   Last week, the pilot course 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 kicked off in Utrecht with nineteen participating PhD and EngD candidate. Six lecturers across the 4TU’s will introduce them to the Research through Design method. They will be challenged to frame their research but also reflect on the broader use and implications of the methodology over the course of 5 course days.   Stephan Wensveen guided them through the first day by explaining basic principles of RtD. Teams were formed among the participants, and the first assignment was completed: an exercise around peeling apples following a design brief.

  • On January 26, 4TU.Federation attended the Kennis- en Innovatieagenda Sleuteltechnologieën (KIA ST) event at NEMO, where the ten action agendas for the National Technology Strategy (NTS) were officially launched. 🚀 𝟰𝗧𝗨+, the academic engineering domain, comprising the four Dutch technical universities TU Delft, TU/e, University of Twente, Wageningen University & Research and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, played an active role in shaping these agendas and contributed to discussions on priorities, governance and next steps. 💡 The action agendas translate the Netherlands’ 2035 ambitions into 53 large-scale public–private innovation programmes, representing over €14 billion in investments. The Chair of 4TU, Sjoukje Heimovaara, joined the Minister of Economic Affairs and representatives of NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek), TNO, Netherlands Academy of Engineering and the industry on stage to mark the official launch. “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴’ 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺. • 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟰𝗧𝗨.𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 Tim van der Hagen Throughout his time as Rector Magnificus and President of TU Delft, Tim actively shaped the development of 4TU and its predecessors. He experienced the emergence of 3TU and later 4TU from the very beginning. Over the years, he helped build the federation into a strong and trusted collaboration between the four Dutch technical universities. 🌱 From his positions as Director of the 𝘛𝘜 𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘧𝘵 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘦 and Dean of 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 to his roles within the 4TU Daily Board, General Board and Research Board, Tim consistently championed cooperation. With energy, openness and a strong overview of the whole, he brought people together and helped strengthen shared ambitions in research, education and innovation. “𝘛𝘪𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘧 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.
