New in #Transfusion: Researchers from across the blood community reviewed data from the Transfusion-Transmissible Infections Monitoring System (TTIMS), which tracks trends in ~60% of the U.S. blood supply, to examine how reducing donor deferral periods for certain risk behaviors affected HIV, HBV and HCV prevalence. Here’s what they found: ✅ HIV prevalence: 2.5 → 2.0 per 100,000 donations. ✅ HBV prevalence: 6.5 → 6.2 per 100,000 donations. ✅ HCV prevalence: 19.7 → 9.6 per 100,000 donations. The bottom line: Shorter donor deferrals did not compromise the safety of the U.S. blood supply. The last time AABB met in San Diego, the blood and biotherapies community was turning the page on the Zika virus outbreak, the Food and Drug Administration had just approved the first two CAR T-cell therapies, and “individual donor assessment” was just an idea. Our field looks different today. We’ve unlocked new therapies, welcomed new donors and charted new ways to change lives. A lot has changed, but one thing never does: The AABB Annual Meeting is where our community comes together to turn ideas into action. The next chapter starts in two weeks. See you at #AABB2025.✨
