We know that administrative hurdles can have a big impact on the lives of older adults with low income. New research from Urban Institute shows the devastating impact of burdensome paperwork and recertification processes for SNAP beneficiaries across ages. Key findings include: 🥗 Nearly one in four adults (24%) age 18 to 64 in families receiving SNAP report that their benefits were stopped or interrupted during the last year. 📉 Families lose an average of $550 per year when their benefits are interrupted. States also face higher administrative costs to reprocess applications. As states prepare for expanded work requirements and reduced federal support, the burden on SNAP administrators — and participants — is only growing. 🔗 Read the report: http://spr.ly/6044AFTMg

Thanks to Social Finance Institute for spotlighting the AARP Foundation Upskilling Initiative. This pilot aligned the interests of small businesses and their workers -- guaranteeing wage increases upon completion of training.
Can wage-linked training unlock opportunities for older workers? In Workforce Realigned, Vol. II, a new book by the Social Finance Institute, Claire Casey of the AARP Foundation explores a promising model for upskilling older workers: a financial risk-sharing initiative that reimburses smaller employers for training costs -- if they commit to guaranteed wage increases for low-income older workers. A pilot program tested the model, with exciting results: ✅ 308 participants completed training ✅ 100% received wage increases ✅ Average wage gain: $3/hour ✅ 75% received a wage boost above the minimum required for reimbursement of training costs This model doesn’t just benefit older workers; it offers a scalable blueprint for upskilling millions of lower-wage employees across the country. Many Gen Xers entered the workforce in the 1980s, just as private-sector companies were eliminating pension plans but before 401(k) savings plans were widely available. With the oldest members of this generation soon approaching retirement, new research shows they're anxious about Social Security and their own savings. In this story from AARP, learn more about Gen X's unique retirement burdens.

Fighting age discrimination matters. Whether it is getting or keeping a job, finding housing or receiving healthcare. We’re working hard to make sure everyone gets a fair shot no matter their age. That means fighting for you in Congress, in state houses and in the courts to put an end to age discrimination. It also means helping employers find and keep talented older workers. At the end of the day, it’s all about making sure people are treated fairly based on their qualifications and needs, not their age. Together, we can raise awareness and make a difference. On #AgeismAwarenessDay, it’s important to remember that some ageism is invisible by design. At AARP Foundation, we are confronting age bias where it’s hardest to see: in algorithms. When Meta targeted trucking job ads exclusively to young men, excluding qualified women and older workers, it revealed a troubling reality – AI can automate our biases and quietly scale them. That's why AARP Foundation joined REAL Women in Trucking’s class action charge against Meta with the EEOC. Over the past five years, AARP Foundation Litigation has joined nearly a dozen age-related cases to strengthen and clarify protections for older workers. We're setting precedents so technological progress means progress for all workers. Age discrimination against older workers is a serious and persistent problem in the workforce. It can especially affect people in low-wage jobs, as it can prevent finding work, saving for retirement, and accessing benefits like health care. According to new research from AARP, age discrimination is holding steady among workers 50+. Key findings include: - Nearly all (91%) of those surveyed believe age discrimination against older workers is common. - 60% of older workers have experienced subtle forms of age discrimination, such as assumptions that older employees are less tech-savvy and more resistant to change. Earlier this week, over 100 volunteer leaders convened for the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide National Meeting, as they prepared for the upcoming tax season and coordination of their state volunteer teams. AARP CEO Myechia Minter-Jordan, MD, MBA joined AARP Foundation Vice President of Volunteer Programs Mioshi Moses, JD to express their gratitude and highlight the transformational work of nearly 29,000 #TaxAide volunteers who serve over 1.7 million taxpayers each year. Research shows that tax refunds can improve credit scores for people with low income and alleviate the persistent financial stress that many older adults feel.
