  • We love seeing sustainability leaders come together to share ideas on living lab programs that give students real-world sustainability experience. Excited to keep the conversation going at #AASHE25!

View profile for Daryl Pierson, Ph.D.

University of California, Merced - Strategic leader advancing sustainability

This week's Living Lab Summit at Stanford University brought together a number of institutions to discuss opportunities and look at experiential learning projects that provide students with real-world experiences. Living lab projects can be useful tools for students to gain professional experience and development before entering the workforce. Has your institution considered starting a living lab program? I am attending the AASHE Conference in Minneapolis if you would like to have a more in-depth conversation. Hope to see you there. #AASHE, #SUSTAINABLESTANFORD, #TUM, #UCOP, #UCBERKELEY, #UCIRVINE, #UCMERCED, #UCRIVERSIDE, #SUSTAINUCMERCED

  • In AASHE’s 20th Anniversary series, L Julian Keniry reflects on what it means to “claim a seat” in classrooms, boardrooms, and communities as we build a more sustainable and equitable future. Drawing inspiration from the Greensboro Four and AASHE’s co-founders, Julian reminds us that higher education sustainability is not just about operations or strategy. It’s about connection, courage, and creating space for others to lead. For 20 years, AASHE has helped campuses embody these values, expanding opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to take their rightful seats at the table and, in many cases, to build new ones altogether. 📖 Read her full reflection here: https://lnkd.in/giyVbWjf Join the conversation! • 🌟 Meet AASHE Fellow Kim Hankins 🌟 As Manager of Sustainability at McHenry County College, Kim Hankins embraces the complexity of sustainability in higher education. From curriculum and operations to student engagement and community partnerships, she sees endless opportunities to spark change. While the abundance of possibilities can feel overwhelming at times, Kim is learning to prioritize strategically, lean into collaboration, and embrace sustainability as a dynamic, evolving process. For Kim, the motivation has always been clear: the students. Whether she’s helping a student find a free recycled binder, speaking to a class about greenwashing, or supporting a new sustainability project, she’s inspired by the energy and curiosity each new generation brings. “Their enthusiasm keeps me inspired,” she reflects, “and reminds me that progress often starts with awareness and conversation.” Among her proudest accomplishments is earning her doctorate in sustainability in her 50s, an achievement that was as humbling as it was rewarding. This milestone not only deepened her expertise but also reinforced her belief in the power of persistence, lifelong learning, and resilience. Kim also knows that sustainability work can sometimes feel lonely. Her advice? Find your people. Whether through professional networks, peer support, or grassroots connections, she believes building strong relationships is essential to sustaining momentum and amplifying the message that sustainability is not a “nice to have,” but a “need to have.” Now more than ever, she emphasizes the importance of lifting each other up and reminding our campuses that sustainability is essential—not optional. 👏 Thank you to all of our 2025 AASHE Fellows for sharing your journeys, challenges, and wisdom. Together, you’ve shown what’s possible when we lead with purpose, creativity, and collaboration. 💡 Applications are still open for the 2026 Fellows and other categories of the AASHE Sustainability Awards! • As AASHE celebrates 20 years, Arthur E. Frazier, III AIA, Director of Facilities at Spelman College, reflects on how this community has guided campuses like Spelman toward a sustainable future. From LEED-certified projects like the MSC Center for Innovation & the Arts and the Wellness Center to residence halls that blend historic preservation with sustainable design, Spelman’s campus demonstrates how thoughtful buildings can inspire a culture of sustainability. Art reminds us that sustainability is about more than infrastructure. It’s about community, equity, and preparing students to lead in a rapidly changing world. 📖 Read the full reflection here: https://lnkd.in/gFvNsweN Join the conversation! • We love seeing reflections like this from leaders in our community. Thank you, Trina, for all you do to advance sustainability! #AASHE20th

During my role as a chief sustainability officer, someone commented, “You don’t really do sustainability, do you?” That question from an executive reminded me how misunderstood our work can be. Sustainability isn’t about recycling bins or lightbulbs. It’s about connecting people, shaping systems, and driving real impact. AASHE has spent 20 years giving professionals the tools, credibility, and community to make that work real. As I reflect on my journey in the following article, I see how much that support matters—not just for me, but for every sustainability professional pushing for meaningful impact. #AASHE20th

  • 🌟 Meet AASHE Fellow Rob Andrejewski 🌟 As Director of Sustainability at the University of Richmond, Rob Andrejewski values his role as a connector, facilitator, and bridge-builder. He believes the greatest impact of sustainability professionals comes from cultivating trust, aligning priorities, and weaving environmental and social values into everyday decisions. His own career path was far from linear, spanning roles as a travel guide editor, ropes course facilitator, environmental educator, and adjunct professor. He now sees each step as vital preparation for his current work. To his younger self, he’d say: “Trust your instincts, follow what feels right, and prioritize the ride over the destination.” Among his proudest accomplishments is the University of Richmond’s Eco-Corridor, an 18-acre living landscape where nature, education, and community converge. Featuring a restored creek, food forest, apiary, and orchard, it is both a sanctuary for local wildlife and a space for students and neighbors to connect with the environment – and with one another – in meaningful ways. Rob is deeply motivated by the students he works with in the office and in the classroom. Their clarity of purpose and bold belief in a better future remind him that higher education is not only positioned to nurture the next generation of changemakers, but also to be a place of hope for the rest of us in uncertain times. His students’ passion fuels his own, both as an educator and as a parent working toward a just and livable future for his children. For Rob, sustainability is “the ultimate team sport.” He believes everyone’s gifts are needed if we are to meet the challenges before us. He is grateful for the mentors, colleagues, and networks that make this work both possible and joyful. 👏 Join us in celebrating Rob Andrejewski and all the AASHE Fellows who are shaping higher education as a force for sustainability. 💡 And don’t forget: Applications are now being accepted for the 2026 Fellows and other categories of the AASHE Sustainability Awards!
