The mission of AASLH is to provide leadership and resources to help the history community thrive.
About us
AASLH is your home for history. We provide leadership and support for our members as they work tirelessly to preserve and interpret state and local history and make the past more meaningful to all Americans. On our website, you will find over 1000 searchable resources including books, white-papers, templates, and more. There, you can also read articles and news from our individual and institutional members. We offer courses and programs throughout the year for history professionals and organizations to learn and grow. Our workshops and classes are offered both in person and online. AASLH is also an advocacy group. We sponsor, advocate, and lobby on behalf of state and local history at the national level through strategic partnerships with several organizations. Not least, the Annual Meeting allows 1000 history professionals, volunteers, and enthusiasts to come together each year to share ideas and tactics. AASLH began in 1904, under the wing of the American Historical Association. Then called the Conference of State and Local Historical Societies, AASLH broke out on its own in December of 1940 to become the American Association for State and Local History. Now, 100 years after the first organization was created in support of the burgeoning field of state and local history, AASLH is still the only comprehensive national organization dedicated to the field at large. From its headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, AASLH is proud to be a home for those who work and volunteer in the field of state and local history.

The director of the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague is considering suspending loans to museums in the United States due to funding cuts at federal agencies that support museums and Trump administration interference in museums and exhibitions. The director says there is uncertainty that lent objects would receive proper care.

The Museum of African American History in Boston was recently told its $500,000 federal grant was cancelled because it no longer "serves the interest of the United States." As the museum's director points out, African Americans are embedded in key moments of the country's history. AASLH helped share the museum's story with CNN. If you'd like to share how your organization has been impacted by funding cuts with journalists, please fill out our survey at tinyurl.com/mwaecayt.

Last week, two people attending an event held at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington D.C. were fatally shot in front of the museum. The attack is being investigated as a hate crime and act of terrorism. AASLH supports the American Alliance of Museum's condemnation of this violence and its reaffirmation of the vital role of museums as "trusted civic spaces" and forums for "learning, dialogue, and connection."

There is only one week left to respond to the National Survey of History Practitioners! More than 3,000 of your colleagues have already taken the time to help us understand who works in our field, how they're paid, and how they feel about their work. The survey only takes 10 minutes to complete. With your participation, we can build a stronger, more sustainable field. Complete the survey at tinyurl.com/NSHP2025.

Earlier this month, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction ordering the Trump administration to reverse its dismantling of the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), including reinstating cancelled grants. If you have received an IMLS reinstatement letter—or expected one but have not received it yet—please fill out AASLH's Disruption Impact Survey. With your permission, AASLH can share your responses with parties such as attorneys coordinating legal actions in defense of IMLS and other federal agencies. Fill the survey out at tinyurl.com/mwaecayt.
