Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Connect Bay Area Act (SB 63), which creates a Public Transit Revenue Measure for five Bay Area counties, which now moves to collecting voter signatures. AC Transit applauds the support of California lawmakers for the measure that would create a sustainable funding stream that protects AC Transit and other Bay Area transit systems from service reductions that disproportionately impact transit-dependent riders, limit workforce mobility, increase traffic congestion, and degrade regional air quality. Governor Newsom’s approval of SB 63 is a pivotal step that now advances the measure toward qualification for the November 2026 ballot. About us
The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District is the largest public bus system in California, serving 13 cities and adjacent unincorporated areas in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. AC Transit has been serving the East Bay since 1960, taking over from the Key System and its predecessors, which carried passengers via buses, horse-drawn rail, electric streetcars, and ferries over the previous 100 years. AC Transit’s mission is to provide safe, convenient, courteous, and reliable transit service.

Last week, friends, family, and colleagues came together honor the life of longtime AC Transit Director H.E. Christian Peeples. The AC Transit Board named the Zero Emission Program the H. E. Christian "Chris" Peeples Zero Emission Program in recognition of his visionary leadership and advocacy in environmentally sustainable public transportation, especially hydrogen fuel cell technology pioneered at AC Transit. Director Peeples' legacy was commended by State Senator Jesse Arreguin, Congressman John Garamendi, Alameda County Board of Supervisor Lena Tam, and Berkeley Council member and Sierra Club leader Igor Tregub with memorial resolutions. We extend our gratitude to Bruce De Benedictis for hosting the memorial at Oakland's Fratellanza Club.

The City of Berkeley unveiled the Southside Complete Streets project this week. The upgrades, which impact Bancroft Way, Dana, and Fulton streets, include a bus lane on Bancroft, two-way cycle tracks, traffic signal improvements, and various pedestrian crossing improvements. The Bancroft bus lane will improve travel times, and the other multimodal improvements make it easier and safer for our riders to access our service. It was a pleasure to hear from, and talk to Adena Ishii, Mayor Elect for the City of Berkeley, Councilmember Cecilia Lunaparra, Councilmember Mark Humbert, and others at the event. The project was funded by Alameda County Transportation Commission and Caltrans, in addition to other various sources. Today, we honored the life and legacy of Director H.E. Christian "Chris" Peeples. Director Peeples was first appointed to the AC Transit Board of Directors in 1997 as an At-Large member and served for 28 years as one of the longest-serving board members in our history. He was a dedicated public servant and transit advocate who championed equity, sustainability, and service for all, especially underserved communities. Under his leadership, AC Transit became a national model for innovation in bus rapid transit and environmental stewardship through the introduction of zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell buses. We thank him for his service and contributions to our community. Families and friends celebrated his legacy in the East Bay. https://lnkd.in/g3TkzSck
