On Monday, May 19th, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Whitman Middle School. Since applying to the MSBA’s Core Program in 2019, the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District has been waiting for this momentous occasion! While the schoolwork is ramping down, construction efforts are ramping up to take advantage of the coming summer, which will include installation of utilities, concrete foundations, and the start of steel erection. By the time the students return in the fall, they can expect to see half the structural steel erected! Ai3 is excited to continue collaborating with the Town of Whitman, the School District, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), the OPM (Colliers Engineering & Design), and the General Contractor (Fontaine Bros., Inc.) in making this beautiful new school come to life for the students, staff, and community of Whitman, MA. On April 29th at Watertown Middle School, Ai3 team members participated in the 1st annual STEM Night sponsored by the Watertown Business Coalition and Watertown Public Schools. This interactive and informative event celebrated STEM (Science, Technology, Math, and Engineering) in the Watertown community, including the Watertown Public Schools Science and Math curriculum, Watertown High School’s FIRST Robotics Club, Watertown life sciences companies, Watertown High School’s Career & Technical education programs, STEM clubs and community collaborations, and more! Ai3 prepared posters that showcased how architects use STEM in the design and analysis of school buildings and how STEM is incorporated into Ai3’s design of Watertown’s Hosmer Elementary School, Cunniff Elementary School, Lowell Elementary School, and Watertown High School. Ai3 also presented the conceptual design of the new Watertown Middle School project and provided a kit-of-parts for children and adults to design their own middle school for Watertown! Last month, Justin Thibeault, AIA, NCARB, Principal at Ai3, raised the bar with his self-assembled and curated geothermal display, which he presented to over 50 students at Galvin Middle School in Canton, MA. In conjunction with Consigli Construction Co., Inc. and LeftField, the concepts of geothermal wells and ground-source heat pumps were described as well as how that specific heating system benefits the new Galvin Middle School project and how these wells and systems are installed. The engaged students asked a number of questions related to the geothermal component but also about the project in general. The enthusiastic group cheered when it was noted that their new school was being designed as an all-electric building, using no fossil fuels as an energy source. This lesson supported the Land, Air, Water & Energy Resources Unit, aligning with Canton Public Schools' curriculum. Future lessons in this educational series will be scheduled as the project progresses to engage students with real-world examples. On April 9, 2025, the Owner’s Project Manager, Peregrine Group LLC, hosted a tour of the new Central Falls High School, which is currently under construction. Staff from the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) as well as leadership members of the Central Falls School District were in attendance. The feedback from RIDE and the School District was very positive; in fact, everyone was excited about the larger classrooms that contain an abundance of daylight and exterior views of the City. Central Falls has a robust number of career technical education programs, and everyone was thrilled to see these CTE programs distributed throughout the new school. The new 123,844sf Central Falls High School, which will serve 751 students in grades 9-12, embraces the small city urban context with a minimized overall footprint that maximizes exterior views and greenspace. Ai3 is thrilled to continue collaborating with the City, the School Department, RIDE, the OPM, and the General Contractor (Brait Construction Managers) in making this beautiful new school come to life for the students, staff, and community of Central Falls, RI. Congratulations to Fontaine Bros., Inc., who was recently awarded the General Contractor contract for the new Whitman Middle School project. Ai3 is excited to continue our successful relationship with Fontaine, having worked together over 10 years ago on the construction of the new East Bridgewater Jr./Sr. High School. We are also thrilled to announce that the Whitman Middle School final bid came in well below the project budget! The new 138,605sf building will serve 675 students in grades 5-8 in a 21st Century middle school learning environment. The new Whitman Middle School is designed as a Net-Zero Ready community resource with a strong connection to the outdoors for educational opportunities. Ai3 is looking forward to construction getting underway and to continue collaborating with the Town of Whitman, School District, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), the OPM (Colliers Engineering & Design), and Fontaine in making this beautiful new school come to life for the students, staff, and community of Whitman, MA. On December 10th, Canton taxpayers voted to authorize funding for the William H. Galvin Middle School project - a new 218,350sf building for grades 5-8. This is a significant milestone contributing to the ultimate goal of a completed middle school by the Fall of 2028. Once completed, Galvin Middle School will be one of the largest middle schools in the Commonwealth. We look forward to continue collaborating with the Town of Canton, MA, Canton Public Schools, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), the OPM (LeftField), and the Construction Manager (Consigli Construction Co., Inc.) as we move into the Design Development phase of the project in order to further plan, develop, and refine the programming and layout of the new school.
