Each year the AFRL Scholars program at Eglin AFB hosts a leader in science and technology as the keynote speaker to motivate and inspire students toward greatness during and after their time with us. 🗣️ This year the program "shot for the stars" when finding the right keynote speaker by hosting an interview with Navy SEAL, physician, pilot and astronaut Jonny Kim during a live downlink from the International Space Station! 🛰️🧑🚀 During the interview the interns heard Jonny’s perspective on how math helps with problem solving in space, the different ways that you can motivate yourself during significant career shifts, and most importantly, how to use your personal values as a north star to lead you through an amazing career. 👏👏👏 Check out the full interview from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's perspective in the comments! 👇 #AFResearchLab | #InternationalSpaceStation | #AFRLScholars | #JohnnyKim | #AFRL

July 17th, 1995 - the collective eyes of the world looked to the stars after an announcement that would change the trajectory - and navigational ability - of humanity. The United States Air Force revealed its Global Positioning System, or GPS to the world. 🌎 And it had just reached full operability. 🛰️ This system has since expanded from 24 to 31 satellites, changing how we connect, how we travel and how we keep operators safe around the globe - in major part due to AFRL's predecessor labs.🔬 The incredible work done to create these constellations was born in the 1950s from research funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, leading to the creation of the modern laser and the cesium atomic clock. 🕰️ These discoveries launched the Department of Defense's efforts to create a more sophisticated system that could track nuclear submarines in the 1960s. The Air Force and AFRL's predecessors were then tasked with making this a more robust enterprise in 1973. 📡 So next time you open your maps app to find a local restaurant to try in that city you've been yearning to visit - thank the airmen, operators, civilians and researchers who all made it possible. 👏 #AFResearchLab | #GPS | #AirForce | #SpaceForce

A congratulations and thank you to our "Chief Geek" Dr. Timothy Bunning upon his retirement! Dr. Bunning joined AFRL in 1990 in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate as a Ph.D. student, funded through an Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) doctoral fellowship with his research being conducted on-site. After earning his doctorate and conducting post-doctoral studies at Cornell University he spent six years as an on-site contractor in the directorate before transitioning to civil service there in 1998. He has served in numerous positions including: 👨🔬Bench-level Scientist/Engineer 🧑💼First-and-Second-Level Supervisor ⚙️Division Technical Director within the Directorate ... All between 1998 and 2015, leading to his selection to be the directorate’s Chief Scientist. He served in that position until his appointment as the AFRL Chief Technology Officer in March 2020. Dr. Bunning's strategic leadership has shaped AFRL’s technological trajectory, positioning us to win the future. #AFResearchLab | #AFRL | #RetirementCeremony | #AirForce

#ICYMI, five years after the United States Air Force brought in aeromedical nurse practitioners into the fold, their contributions have been invaluable in our support of airmen and guardians worldwide. Their expertise stems from training that begins with a minimum of 24 months of primary care experience and is expanded by the Aerospace Medicine Primary Course within the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, or USAFSAM. Learn more about their mission, training and how it all leads to them being more than suitable substitutes for flight surgeons in some cases via our link in the comments. #AFResearchLab | #USAirForce | #USAFSAM | #AerospaceMedicine | #NursePractitioner

The mission of the modern United States Air Force is a mighty one that's made possible each and every day by the airmen who answered the call of duty to continually fly, fight and win. ✈️ But to maintain this level of excellence, medical professionals are needed to vet, care for and clear these operators to ensure their safety during these sorties - which is where aeromedical nurse practitioners, or ANPs, step in.⚕️ Learn more about their critical role in maintaining readiness, how their career field has evolved over the past five years since its creation and how their expertise stems from the pivotal training they receive within the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, or USAFSAM via the link in the comments. 👇 #AFResearchLab | #AerospaceMedicine | #USAirForce | #Readiness
