Five years ago, transportation access and disability rights advocate Anna Zivarts started #WeekWithoutDriving to call on elected officials to understand what it was like for their nondriving constituents to move through their communities. Today, it's a national movement ➡️https://buff.ly/BpHdsTI 🚌 🚲🚶🏽♀️This year's Week Without Driving is September 29–October 5, 2025! ‼️ WEBINAR ALERT: Join us Thursday, August 28 for Quick-Builds in Indian Country: Advancing Road Safety through Community Engagement! Register ➡️ https://buff.ly/aBH9YEC This webinar will provide tribes and other communities with a step-by-step process for planning, designing, and implementing Quick-Build traffic calming projects. In 2024, the Pueblo of Jemez, Cherokee Nation, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, University of Montana, and America Walks were awarded a Road to Zero traffic safety grant to develop effective strategies for addressing the disproportionate impact of pedestrian fatalities in Indian Country. According to Smart Growth America’s Dangerous by Design, Native people are more than three times as likely to be killed while walking, compared with the average American. The project focused on engaging the community on the issue of road safety and then installing temporary structures which redesign roadway geometry to slow vehicle speeds. Project team members will discuss the details involved in designing and implementing these “hands-on” public events, and present the evaluation results and lessons learned. Plans to establish a national coalition focused on preventing traffic deaths and injuries in Indian Country will also be announced. Generously sponsored by National Safety Council's #RoadtoZero Coalition

Every year, Week Without Driving uplifts the stories of every day people who cannot drive. This year, we're providing mini-grants to organizations from coast to coast so they can: • Host community-focused events, such as walk audits, transit ride-alongs, panel discussions and more, alongside their elected officials; • Gather firsthand accounts that pinpoint exactly where our transportation system needs to change; • Create and distribute videos, graphics that amplify nondriver voices and spotlight transportation gaps. Every dollar helps fuel these critical efforts and builds a collective movement. America Walks reposted this
I believe it should be easy for everyone to access recreation and quality outdoor places. To be healthy humans with balanced nervous systems, we need time to regularly reset ourselves away from noise, air pollution, and screens. But in the car-dependent U.S. where one third of the population doesn't have a driver's license, it can be challenging in the extreme to attend to life's basic needs. Author Anna Zivarts is one of the people in the U.S. who doesn't have a driver's license and has done and continues to do notable work on raising awareness about our flawed mobility system. She started the Week Without Driving in Washington State, and now this advocacy and awareness challenge is managed nationally by America Walks. Whether you are a mobility advocate, someone interested in learning more about getting around without driving, or a pro at car-free travel, I encourage you to participate in this year's challenge (Sept 29-Oct 5) wherever you are and whatever you're doing. And if you wind up driving that week, it's ok. Just use it as an opportunity to consider how someone who can't drive would handle the situation.
