DID YOU KNOW… Truck drivers routinely rank detention at customer facilities as one of their top industry concerns. #ATRI’s latest detention research quantifies not only the scale and frequency of detention but also its impact on #roadwaysafety. In 2023, nearly 40% of drivers’ stops experienced detention – defined as delays of more than 2 hours. Those percentages were even higher among women drivers and among drivers who operate in the spot market versus contract #freight. ATRI’s research found nearly 136 million hours of lost driver productivity attributable to detention in 2023, at an overall industry cost of $11.5 billion dollars when factoring in costs such as wasted fuel and lost revenue-generating miles. Knowing these staggering numbers can help shippers recognize how much they lose from detention and carriers negotiate fairer detention fees. As for safety impacts, ATRI utilized its truck GPS dataset to calculate the impact of detention on driver speeds. Examining the 24-hour period before and after a driver visits a customer facility, detained drivers drove 14.6% faster than their peers that were not detained. While it’s fairly intuitive that drivers would drive faster after being detained in order to make up for lost time, this analysis shows that drivers also speed on the front end in an attempt to secure an earlier spot in line to be loaded or unloaded. Meet ATRI Research Advisory Committee (RAC) member Misti Olszewski, ARM. Misti is the Vice President of Enterprise Safety at Covenant where she oversees safety for the four asset-based for-hire carriers under the Covenant Logistics umbrella. Ranging from agriculture-based live haul and grain trucks to one of the 24 carriers approved to haul for the Department of Defense (DOD), she also works closely with a diverse group of drivers, including shuttle, local, solo regional, dedicated, team OTR, company drivers, and independent contractors. Named a 2023 Top Woman to Watch by Women in Trucking, Misti’s journey in the trucking industry is deeply personal. Growing up as the daughter, granddaughter, and sister of truck drivers and owner-operators, the trucking life is in her blood. She understands the challenges and joys that come with a life on the road, and this unique perspective fuels her unwavering commitment to the safety of drivers and the motoring public. Misti’s career began as a Risk Analyst at Covenant Transport, and over the past 24 years, she has been fortunate to explore various roles within both Risk and Safety. She has been responsible for three record-setting years of the lowest DOT accident rate in Covenant Logistics' history. We look forward to Misti's continued contributions and her service as a 2025-2026 ATRI RAC member. #ATRI’s RAC is comprised of government officials, academics, professional truck drivers and trucking company executives and suppliers from a diverse cross-section of the industry who are charged with annually recommending a research agenda for the Institute. DID YOU KNOW… The top 5-ranked reasons (of 12) why entry-level techs choose trucking over other industries were: 1) higher pay, 2) more convenient shifts, 3) more interesting work, 4) preferred location/commute, and 5) more variety of work. Though pay and hours are widely understood as key employment factors, the high importance that techs attach to the interesting work and variety of work should not be overlooked by diesel shops. Furthermore, subgroups of techs highly prioritize some aspects of employment like cleaner shops and incentives for additional training.
