The impacts of extreme weather are intensifying, creating increased health risks due to more frequent and severe extreme weather events. Heat waves, in particular, pose serious dangers to public health. Here are three tips on how you and your loved ones can stay safe: ☀️ Make a plan - Know where you’ll go to cool down if you don’t have air conditioning or the power goes out. Cooling centers, libraries, public pools, shopping malls or movie theaters could be options. ☀️ Build a kit - Keep items on you that will help keep you cool such as spray bottles, ice packs and water. ☀️ Stay informed - Learn to recognize the signs of heat-related illnesses and seek immediate medical attention if you, or someone you know, has any symptoms. To learn more of the steps you can take during extreme heat, head over to our website at https://brnw.ch/21wSP9l #Americares

As communities continue to heal from the devastating impact of #HurricaneHelene, Americares is launching a year-long mental health and psychosocial support initiative to care for those who have been on the frontlines—first responders, health workers, nonprofit staff and volunteers. Based out of Asheville, NC, our mental health specialists will offer free individual and group support sessions, plus trainings in Psychological First Aid, stress management, coping strategies and more. This initiative is designed to build resilience, prevent burnout and help frontline workers and organizations better prepare for future crises. Launching during #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, this effort is part of Americares long-term recovery work across the Southeast, with a focus on reaching underserved and marginalized communities. 💙 Learn more about how we’re supporting those who step up in times of crisis: https://brnw.ch/21wSNjO

Severe storms and tornadoes ripped through the southern Midwest starting Friday night, killing more than 20 people and injuring dozens across Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana. Thousands of homes and buildings are damaged, and nearly 300,000 people were left without power. In response, #Americares has reached out to 61 partner clinics in the affected areas to offer support. We’re prepared to deliver essential medicines, hygiene kits, first aid supplies, and emergency funding to help restore health services and care for survivors. #Midwest #Tornado

Between 2013 and 2023, approximately 88% of all U.S. counties declared a natural disaster, including 95% of the 200 most populated counties according to Forbes. While many see the physical damage from these crisis, the psychological effects can often go unnoticed. In the aftermath of a disaster, stress can ripple throughout a community. Mental health challenges often surge—not only among those already at risk, but also in individuals with no prior history of mental illness. Such events can lead to heightened levels of anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and post-traumatic stress disorder. These health challenges call for a change in the way we respond to extreme weather events. And when it comes to adapting, Americares is leading the way. We work directly with health providers and clinic staff serving vulnerable patients on the front lines to co-create solutions that give them the information, resources and plans to be ready the next time extreme weather strikes. Explore our resources on how you can get ready, respond and recover from weather emergencies both physically and mentally. In Colombia's Catatumbo region, hope rises through adversity. #Americares is supporting displaced families seeking refuge from the armed conflict in Cúcuta with crucial mental health services and health care access. Working alongside local authorities and NGOs, we're building a stronger, more resilient community—one family at a time. This crisis has caused families to take refuge in tents, stadiums, hotels, and on the streets. Americares staff have been working directly in these communities to finds gaps in care. Our mental health team is working with local officials to connect people who need specialized treatment with the right services. Through mid-May 2025, Americares aims to fully integrate identified mental health cases into Cúcuta's local health system to ensure continued care access. Americares is also mapping host communities with local authorities to enhance service coordination with NGO partners. This enables swift delivery of health services while fostering community integration and collective healing.
