ICYMI: This week we went on a behind-the-scenes tour in the East River Tunnel for a closer look at the current conditions requiring full rehabilitation of this critical NEC infrastructure, which when completed will improve future reliability for a new era of rail. Our work set to begin soon will fully modernize the tunnel infrastructure, improving safety, reliability, and security and bring the systems to a state of good repair. The project will involve demolishing the existing tunnel systems down to concrete liners, followed by reconstructing and modernizing all tunnel systems. We're making upgrades to prepare for our new Amtrak Airo trains, which will begin service on Amtrak Cascades in 2026! Construction is underway for a major Amtrak rail yard modernization project in Seattle, where the first group of new trains will be maintained. “This critical investment will help us meet growing customer demand for a new era of rail with brand new trains that will upgrade safety, reliability, and comfort," said Amtrak President Roger Harris, who recently toured the construction site. Crews recently began building the foundation for the new ~100,000 sq ft maintenance facility, with pile driving now underway. When the project is completed in 2027, the modernized rail yard will feature a new two-bay Maintenance and Inspection facility and a new Service and Cleaning bay that provide the foundations for a world-class maintenance yard. Similar investments are already under construction or soon to be underway at six Amtrak rail yards around the country. Construction is underway in Seattle and Philadelphia; contracts were recently awarded for Boston and Washington, D.C.; procurement is underway for improvements in New York City; and planning is progressing for Rensselaer, N.Y. For the first time in nearly two decades, passenger rail is coming back to the Gulf Coast. The new Amtrak Mardi Gras Service will launch soon, offering twice-daily trains between New Orleans and Mobile, with stops in Bay Saint Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula. It’s a major win for regional mobility, economic growth, and access—connecting communities across three states with reliable, comfortable service. More than just restoring service, this is about building a modern transportation future rooted in the culture and connection of the Gulf Coast. Thank you to our partners at the Southern Rail Commission, Louisiana and Mississippi DOTs, and the City of Mobile for making this historic milestone possible.

Amtrak crews are hard at work this week and next week to replace our catenary wires at Dock Bridge and update our electrical system as part of our state-of-good-repair work in advance of the summer months that will help ensure improved reliability for Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT customers traveling to and from New York City and beyond. Through collaboration with our Dock Bridge Rehabilitation Project, which received a US Coast Guard permit to no longer require the bridge to open for boat traffic, our crews have begun removing the unnecessary moveable components for a more efficient system. The six-track, triple-span moveable lift bridge connects Newark and Harrison above the Passaic River, carrying 720 daily Amtrak, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, and NJ TRANSIT trains within one of the busiest sections of the Northeast Corridor. Along with wider improvements made throughout New York and New Jersey this past year, the continued work at Portal Bridge, and the larger Gateway Program, we’re continuing our new era of rail in the Garden State and across the Northeast Corridor.
