"We can’t thank you enough for bringing back the wilderness and the wildness of the Barnard Forest.” — Pam, Local Resident Last week's ribbon cutting at Barnard Forest was more than a celebration—it was a return. With the permanent protection of 29,000 acres in Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness, we’re not just conserving land—we’re restoring access, opportunity, and connection to the outdoors. This means: ✔️ Opening access to hike, fish, and explore ✔️ Support for rural recreation economies ✔️ Opportunity to foster meaningful connections with nature As Pam shared during the event: “This is the place I come for peace and pure enjoyment… In our very rural country, we have very few parks. But we have land. This land is part of our ancestral and collective memory. We mourned the trails we no longer had access to in 2013.” Thanks to the support of our community, AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative now protects nearly 130,000 acres of land. This milestone was made possible through shared vision and collaboration. We’re deeply grateful to our partners at MathWorks, The Conservation Fund, the Penobscot Nation, and everyone who made this day—and this future—possible. 🌲 Together, we’re showing how conservation can be people-centered, community-driven, and built to last. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eNv2m57q

Appalachian Mountain Club reposted this
I am thrilled to share a landmark milestone for the Appalachian Mountain Club: the permanent protection of nearly 29,000 acres of Barnard Forest in Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness—completed years ahead of schedule. This achievement is a triple win: ✔️ Reopening land for recreation that had been closed for nearly 20 years ✔️ Protecting critical wildlife habitat and advancing climate resilience ✔️ Supporting rural jobs in Maine’s forest economy Thanks to a transformative $10 million gift from MathWorks—along with the partnership of The Conservation Fund and the generosity of countless donors—we’ve accelerated AMC’s ability to safeguard one of the most ecologically important landscapes in the eastern United States. With Barnard Forest, AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative now spans nearly 130,000 acres, an area nearly three times the size of Acadia National Park. This is a proud moment for AMC and a powerful example of what’s possible when we come together to protect critical landscapes for the well-being of people and the outdoors. I’m grateful to everyone who helped bring this vision to life. Together, we are building a lasting legacy. 💚 #Conservation #MaineWoods #ClimateAction #BeOutdoors

This summer, Steve Tatko, AMC’s VP of Land & Conservation, and Mandy Carmichael Warner, AMC’s Senior Director of Policy, spent time in the heart of the Maine Woods Initiative—seeing firsthand how our land management work comes to life. From walking through forests regrowing after sustainable harvests, to standing beside new bridges that restore fish passage—every stop told a story of how conservation, recreation, and community thrive together here. The Maine Woods Initiative isn’t just about protecting land—it’s about creating a future where nature and people can flourish, side by side. 🔗 Learn more about our work in the Maine Woods: https://lnkd.in/e3vNrWV7

🌱 AMC’s Path to Net Zero: Leading Climate Action in the Northeast From solar-powered huts in the White Mountains to an all-electric boat in New Hampshire, AMC is reimagining outdoor recreation for a changing climate. Our bold goal: net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050—eliminating at least 90% of emissions and offsetting the rest. It’s a big challenge, but with innovative energy upgrades, smart building improvements, and community support, we’re already making it happen. Across the Northeast, we build and maintain trails to connect people with nature — but we also see, every day, how few trails are accessible to people with disabilities. In Massachusetts, the Trails For All Act (H.915/S.548) would fund inclusive trail design that opens the outdoors to more people. This legislation is a crucial step not just for Massachusetts, but as a blueprint for other states to follow. Let’s lead the way. Ask your Representative to support the #TrailsForAll Act: https://p2a.co/cryo2vu Thanks to Senator Jo Comerford & Michelle Ciccolo, Lexington Selectman for championing this effort!
