I had the honour of welcoming this week 𝗠𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗵, 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗼 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲'𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰, accompanied by a delegation from the ministry and the Lao embassy in Paris. CIRAD has been present in Laos for 30 years with a significant increase in the number of researchers, from 2 to 8 over the past 3 years. Twelve research projects are underway at the intersection of three of our priority themes: #agroecology, sustainable #FoodSystems, and #OneHealth. This meeting provided an opportunity for rich discussions on several areas of current and potential collaboration: ▪️ the development of the 𝗮𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀; ▪️ the need to implement future research projects in the south of the country; ▪️ product labelling approaches, particularly for coffee, such as 𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, a field in which Cirad is already deeply involved alongside AFD - Agence Française de Développement; ▪️ the development of new agricultural practices to prevent #soil erosion; ▪️ and 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, which is 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 and improving the livelihoods of rural communities. #CIRAD is actively engaged on these topics, through the ASSET Project and 𝗡𝗦𝗔𝗘 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 (agroecological transitions), #GREENCUP (agroecology in tea and coffee sectors), 𝗜𝗚 (promotion of geographical indications in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar) and 𝗦𝗪𝗔𝗡 (restoration of soil and water resources).
