In the summer 2024, when I started working on the idea of a Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) presidential panel on the future of AI research, I was not sure about what to do and how, and what could come out of this effort. Then I asked 25 brilliant and experienced AI researchers to work with me, and collectively we had very interesting and insightful discussions and we identified 17 trends in AI research that are shaping the future of this science, covering new research topics (such as factuality, ethics, and safety), new ways of doing research (such as the focus on evaluation and emergent behaviors), new application areas (such as environment sustainability and science), new places to do research (with increasingly more research performed in corporate environments), as well as the societal preception of AI (compared to its reality) and impact of geo-political scenarios on AI research. We also asked the entire AAAI community for their opinion on these trends. With the support of the amazing AAAI office, after about 8 months of work we succeded in generating a report that has been sparking many discussions over the months since its publication during AAAI 2025. What an achievement, starting from an ambitious goal and few ideas! I am very pleased that the AAAI report is one of the winners of the 2025 ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership The Power of Associations Awards, earning a Silver Award. I am deeply grateful to everyone who worked on and championed this report, and I look forward to join the award ceremony tomorrow in Washington D.C.!
