More than 20 dedicated crime scene investigators and bomb technicians from across the U.S. recently completed the intensive 2-week Advanced Post Blast Investigative Techniques Course at the ATF’s National Center for Explosives Training and Research, located on the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. This advanced program dives deep into critical skills for managing large-scale explosives incidents, whether criminal or accidental. During the first week, students honed their expertise in explosives investigation and evidence collection, mastering techniques. In the second week, the focus shifted to hands-on scene processing and witness interview techniques, with training both in the classroom and in practical settings. Students also gained critical insights into legal issues, federal statutes, and courtroom testimony. The goal is to equip these professionals with the knowledge and skills to confidently investigate, manage, and perfect responses to complex explosives incidents. ATF leverages cutting-edge technology to combat gun violence through its Crime Gun Intelligence initiatives, primarily the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network and the National Tracing Center. These powerful tools transform ballistic evidence into actionable investigative leads, helping law enforcement solve and prevent violent gun crimes across the nation. ATF’s NIBIN is the only network of its kind in the U.S., analyzing 7M+ pieces of ballistic evidence, including firearms and shell casings recovered from crime scenes. By examining these items, NIBIN generates critical connections that help identify suspects, link related cases, and disrupt illegal firearm use in violent crimes. The National Tracing Center is the nation’s sole crime gun tracing facility, supporting local, state, federal, and international law enforcement agencies. NTC processes an average of 1,700+ trace requests daily, with nearly 640,000 requests received last year alone. Urgent traces, critical for active investigations, are prioritized and completed in under 48 hours, while routine traces are generally finalized in about seven days. These traces provide vital investigative leads to identify suspects and advance violent crime investigations.
