We’re thrilled to announce that FIVE outstanding California State Polytechnic University-Pomona undergraduate students have each been awarded $2,000 scholarships in recognition of their academic achievement, community involvement, and commitment to environmental stewardship! 🎓 Congratulations to: Angela Alan, Miah Browning, Jenny Phung, Rigoberto Rincon, and Tyler Rousseve. All five recipients are Environmental Studies majors with a 2.75+ GPA, strong ties to the City of Pomona community, and a demonstrated passion for the environment through their essays. We're proud to support the unveiling of this stunning new mural honoring Zacatecas Café, a beloved family restaurant that has been serving the City of Riverside community since 1963! This beautiful artwork reflects the cultural heritage of indigenous Aztecs through modern day Zacatecas that founders Oscar and Josefina Medina brought from Zacatecas, Mexico. Today, their legacy lives on through their son, Jon, and his wife Vickey, who continue to prepare each dish as a tribute to the matriarch who first brought the flavors of Zacatecas to Riverside. The mural serves as a vital piece of public art that beautifies the neighborhood, inspires connection, and celebrates a community's history. Huge thanks to Councilwoman Clarissa Cervantes and her staff for organizing this project, as well as artist Robert Gomez from Blank Canvas LA who beautifully captured the Zacatecas history. Additional supporters who helped bring the mural to life include Supervisor Jose Medina, Senator Sabrina Cervantes, Altura Credit Union, UNIDOS for La Causa, and the Latino Network. Today, I had the privilege of hosting the Ventura Fire Department at Athens Services With 4th of July approaching—and the increased risk of load fires—this visit couldn’t have come at a better time. From reviewing driver procedures to demonstrating how our trucks operate, this collaboration ensures that the fire department is better prepared in case of an emergency. Open communication like this builds stronger partnerships and leads to safer outcomes for everyone. Grateful for the opportunity to share knowledge and align on protocols for handling load fires safely.
