    Integrated Power Magnetics It is a day before my scheduled talk at PwrSoc in Seoul and it is time to start sharing the details of our new magnetic material that has been 4 years in the making. During these 4 years the AM research team generated more than three thousand experiments with the standard magnetic elements of Ni, Fe, Co and trace elements of Mo, P, Si and their oxides. Conceptually the integrated magnetics problems and solutions are simple to describe: Deposit a magnetic film onto a silicon wafer patterned by lithography at a high enough material resistivity to cut the eddy current losses when the thickness of the material is increased. After achieving this goal make sure the material is stable in both manufacturing and end application. It took Atlas Magnetics almost two years to achieve stability in both process and application. Despite the simple problem description, I know of only one commercial success in thin film power magnetics despite dozens of efforts from both public and private institutions. AM's New Magnetic metamaterial can be linearly optimized for Q or Perm or Bsat. In general the higher the Q, the lower the Perm and Bsat. Using the full AM process a material resistivity of 250uohm.cm can be achieved which maximizes frequency response to over 10 MHz at film thicknesses above 20um. However, the 250uohm.cm material has a significant dropoff in permeability and Bsat which we will discuss in a later post, therefore a target manufacturing specification of 125uohm.cm is a better selection in many applications with a permeability of 100 and Bsat of 0.8T. At 100uohm.cm the permeability rises to 120 and Bsat as high as 1.2T. AM's single layer of magnetic material is commercially viable especially given the cost structure of depositing on IC substrate vs. the much more expensive silicon wafer. However, because AM's technology was developed on substrate the capability exists to create multiple layers of magnetic material allowing entry into high inductance, 1uH value applications. Bottom line: the AM process is headed to manufacturing now with a stable process and stable products. to be continued ...
