Roughly 7 million people attended No Kings rallies last weekend in one of the nation’s largest single-day protests in history. Many climate activists came out in force, arguing that authoritarianism is a climate issue. How can climate leaders evolve their means of organizing in the face of an administration undoing decades of environmental progress? In this week’s edition of The Understory, Miranda Green goes behind the scenes with climate activists to discuss balancing the effectiveness of broad messaging while not losing sight of climate change’s looming threat. One person’s trash is another’s treasure. Millions of unwanted garments from wealthy Western countries flow into African markets every year. These clothes are then sold to traders operating in places such as Ghana’s Kantamanto Market. But unsellable garments, which can account for anywhere from 20-50% of a bale’s content, often end up contaminating beaches and clogging drainage systems. This issue inspired Bobby Kolade, founder of BUZIGAHILL, to set up the “return to sender” system, which upcycles exported cast-offs into beautiful garments. For Atmos, Jake Hall highlights the new generation of designers pushing back through upcycling, activism, and art. Or, at the very least, the illusion that we could survive if the moment ever required it. On the surface, that might seem like a sensible adaptation for turbulent times. But what if the blueprints for this modern climate uniform were drawn up in war and in the environmental damage it left behind?
