More than 300 Advocate Health nurses attended the ANCC - American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet and Pathway Conference in Atlanta – the premiere event for professional nursing practice, where we were a proud Silver Sponsor for the third straight year. Nurses from around the world gather to share knowledge and expertise, how they're advancing nursing practice and the work they're doing to improve patient care and outcomes. Nurses from seven of our facilities walked across the stage in recognition of their 2025 Magnet or Pathway to Excellence designations (or re-designations!) and more than 20 of our nurses were invited to share their work. Many individual nurses received awards and Advocate Health was honored with the Hester Davis Organizational Excellence Award for our work with fall prevention. Atrium Health Union was also honored with the 2025 Pathway Award sponsored by Press Ganey for its project that aims to better train nurses for the integration of artificial intelligence into their workflows. This is all part of Advocate Health’s dedication to raising the bar for nursing excellence and creating a positive place for nurses to practice as the Best Place to Care. Meet Karen — a registered nurse in the pediatric emergency department at Atrium Health Union. For 19 years, Karen worked in screen printing before a life-changing moment sparked her interest in pursuing a new career path. After her dad received bypass surgery following a heart attack, Karen was inspired by the nurses and care team members that passionately cared for him during his recovery. “I felt like nursing was what I wanted to do.” Following the experience, Karen went back to school while raising her kids and working full-time. Her devotion to pursuing nursing paid off when she graduated and became an Atrium Health teammate in 2009. Since joining Atrium Health Union Women and Children’s Center, Karen has cared for newborns and pediatric patients across multiple units. So, when the new pediatric emergency department opened in June, she immediately knew it was where she was meant to be. “These kids are so resilient,” she says. “To be able to be there and try to comfort them and gain their trust, that’s what I work toward.” We’re honored to recognize teammates like Karen, whose compassion shines through in every patient interaction.

  • On Sept. 2, 2005, Atrium Health’s Mobile Emergency Hospital, MED-1, departed Charlotte as part of the national response to Hurricane Katrina. What began as a mission to Louisiana quickly pivoted to Mississippi, where the team set up in a demolished Kmart parking lot in Waveland. Over the next seven weeks, MED-1 treated more than 7,500 patients, becoming a beacon of hope in a community devastated by one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. Dr. William Miles reflects on the event 20 years later. He shares, “Sometimes, the most meaningful care comes when all you have are buckets and glow sticks with a MED-1 team willing to give everything they’ve got. That experience taught me that medicine isn’t about shiny facilities. It’s about presence, compassion and teamwork.” From makeshift helicopter landing zones to surgeries performed in mobile operating rooms, MED-1 proved that innovation, grit and compassion could overcome even the most unimaginable circumstances. The gratitude of the Waveland community left a lasting impact on every teammate who served. • Meet Sydney, a radiologic technologist at Atrium Health. Sydney’s journey into radiologic technology was driven by a deep desire to help others. “I’ve always been drawn to making a difference,” she said. “Radiologic technology allows me to do that every day, and I love that no two days are ever the same.” Originally from Chesterfield, Virginia, Sydney earned a degree in health science before discovering her passion for imaging through Carolinas College of Health Sciences. Her clinical experience at Atrium Health opened the door to a career where she now plays a vital role across multiple departments — from the operating room and emergency department to inpatient rooms and the radiology department. “The most rewarding part of my job is being there for patients during stressful or scary moments,” she said. “It’s fulfilling to know the images I capture help doctors diagnose and treat patients. And I get to do it alongside an incredible team.” Sydney said success in her field requires empathy, patience, attention to detail and strong communication skills. “Every patient is different, and we have to adapt to meet their needs while ensuring accuracy and care.” She’s also witnessed firsthand how technology continues to evolve. “Imaging techniques are becoming faster and more advanced, and radiation safety protocols are constantly improving,” she said. “Staying current is essential — for both patient safety and our own.” Sydney credits Atrium Health for providing support and opportunities to grow. “From my time as a student to now, I’ve always felt encouraged to learn and take on new challenges,” she said. “Atrium Health’s size and diversity offer endless paths for career development.” As Radiologic Technology Month is celebrated, Sydney is proud to recognize the work she and her colleagues do every day. “It’s a chance to highlight the impact we make and the heart we bring to every patient interaction.” Explore radiology careers at Atrium Health: https://bit.ly/46LQqbs

  • During halftime at the Carolina Panthers Crucial Catch game, Atrium Health Levine Cancer patients Wesley, Becca and Georgette were joined by 100 Atrium Health caregivers on the field where they proudly waved colored ribbons, each symbolizing a different type of cancer. We honor every patient and family touched by cancer, walking beside them with pride and unwavering support throughout their journey.

  • We partnered with the Carolina Panthers to tackle cancer at this year’s Crucial Catch game. Today was filled with moments of hope and unity as we honored some truly remarkable fighters and survivors in our community. Atrium Health Levine Cancer patients — Kevin, Jessica, Chelsea, Kelly, Carson and David — enjoyed exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences as part of the NFL’s Crucial Catch initiative, which raises awareness for cancer screenings. The journey through cancer is often challenging and exhausting. We were grateful to play a role in this special day, bringing joy and encouragement to our courageous patients. Together, we stand united in the fight against cancer. Keep Pounding! Learn more about these incredible patients: https://bit.ly/479oRZW

  • In the fight against cancer, no one stands alone. Leading up to the Carolina Panthers Crucial Catch game, Atrium Health Levine Cancer patients were invited to Bank of America Stadium for a once-in-a-lifetime experience to watch the team practice and meet the players who inspire hope on and off the field. Six incredible individuals — Jessica, Kevin, Chelsea, Kelly, Carson and David — will serve as honorary captains during the game. Each of them has faced cancer with unwavering strength. During practice, honorary captains met players, shared stories and soaked in the energy of the field. On game day, they will take the field dressed in full uniform, complete with custom cleats and personalized jerseys bearing words that reflect their journeys: Hope, Courage, Joyful, Champion, Warrior and Resilient. These words are more than just nameplates. They represent the spirit, strength and determination of every patient, every teammate and every supporter who believes in the power of community and compassion. • Christina is a medical physicist in radiation oncology at Atrium Health. She first discovered medical physics as a freshman at the University of Toledo. “I was considering switching my major to physics and learned I could concentrate in medical physics. I shadowed radiation physicists and was drawn to radiation oncology—it combined science with the chance to make a real impact in patients’ lives.” Now, Christina appreciates the balance of working closely with two clinics while benefiting from the resources of a large health system. “I’ve been able to take on projects and implement new processes thanks to the support of Atrium Health’s network.” She credits her coworkers—physicists, dosimetrists, therapists and physicians—as her greatest resource. “They’ve answered my questions and helped me grow. The collaboration here is incredible, and everyone is focused on providing the best patient care.” One standout moment was preparing for her board certification exam. “My supervisor and a coworker offered to do a mock oral exam with me. Their support helped me pass on my first try and become ABR certified.” Her day includes chart checks, machine rounds and planning discussions. “Initial chart checks are routine but the most rewarding—they’re where I ensure each patient’s treatment plan goes smoothly.” Christina values Atrium Health’s commitment to learning and innovation. “We’re encouraged to attend conferences or courses each year, and any research or clinical project we’re interested in is supported.” Her advice to new physicists? “Atrium Health is a great place to start. Ask questions, get involved and speak up if you want more exposure—there’s always an opportunity to learn.” What keeps her motivated? “Knowing I play a pivotal role in patient care. My office is near the bell patients ring when they finish treatment—hearing it always makes me smile.” Explore medical physicist careers at Atrium Health: https://bit.ly/4nNIyO8
