Updates

  • More than two decades ago, Austal USA marked a major milestone with the delivery of its first vessels from the Mobile shipyard. In early 2002, Austal USA completed and delivered two 150-foot crew/supply vessels—Anapaula and Veronica—to Otto Candies LLC, finishing both ahead of contract schedule. By the end of January, the vessels had already arrived in Del Carmen, Mexico, where they were based for operations. Built in just eight months, these vessels not only set a record for production speed but also exceeded contract speed targets during official sea trials. Their delivery marked the first vessels built at Austal USA’s newly commissioned, state-of-the-art shipyard in Mobile, Ala., less than a year after the facility opened. Anapaula and Veronica showcased the aluminum shipbuilding expertise, production systems, and in-built quality assurance processes that continue to define Austal USA today, laying the groundwork for the high-performance vessels we build in support of critical maritime missions. #ThrowbackThursday #AustalUSA #Shipbuilding #MobileAL #InnovativeOnLandExceptionalAtSea #MaritimeMilestones

** Update: Feb. 2, 2026 ** * Due to the ongoing government shutdown, Mr. Sermon will no longer be able to attend the Military Additive Manufacturing Summit. We appreciate the organizers’ understanding. For additional event details, please refer to the summit’s official website Strengthening Maritime Dominance Through Advanced Manufacturing As the US Navy looks to scale advanced manufacturing across shipbuilding and sustainment, that conversation continues next week in Tampa. On Wednesday, Matthew Sermon, Direct Reporting Program Manager for the Maritime Industrial Base (MIB) Program, will join senior Navy, industry, and international partners at the Military Additive Manufacturing Summit to discuss how additive manufacturing is reshaping shipbuilding and maintenance capacity. The panel will focus on how the Navy is integrating additive manufacturing into operations and what that means for readiness, speed, and supply chain resilience across the maritime industrial base. Mr. Sermon will discuss: -- How additive manufacturing is being integrated into shipbuilding and ship repair -- Opportunities for industry partners to support the Navy’s AM initiatives -- Strategies to lower barriers for suppliers entering the AM space -- Why workforce development remains essential to scaling advanced manufacturing This is a discussion grounded in practical application, not theory, and directly tied to how the Navy sustains and modernizes the Fleet. Panelists include: -- Moderated by RDML (Ret.) Jason Lloyd, USN, Former Chief Engineer and Deputy Commander for Ship Design, Integration, and Naval Engineering, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) -- Jim Kenny, Executive Vice President, Navy Affairs, Fairbanks Morse Defense -- Don Hairston, Vice President, Advanced Technologies, Austal USA -- Matthew Sermon, SES, Direct Reporting Program Manager, Maritime Industrial Base Program -- VADM Sir Christopher Gardner, KBE, Chief Executive Officer, Submarine Delivery Agency, UK Ministry of Defence Where and when: Panel: Leveraging AM to Revolutionize Shipbuilding & Maintenance Capacity for Sustained Maritime Dominance Wednesday, Feb. 4 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Tampa Convention Center If you’re attending the summit, this panel offers a clear look at how advanced manufacturing is being applied today and where maritime production is headed next. #MIBProgram #MaritimeIndustrialBase #AdditiveManufacturing #Shipbuilding #NavyReadiness Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition Chief of Naval Operations

  • Austal USA recently welcomed Lieutenant General Eric Austin, Commanding General of U.S. Marine Corps Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration (CD&I) and his team along with a congressional staff delegation to our Mobile shipyard earlier today. The visit featured a leadership briefing and a tour of our facilities, including an in-depth look at the recently christened Expeditionary Fast Transport Flight II medical variant, USNS Lansing (EPF 16). During the tour, the group learned more about Austal USA’s modern ship manufacturing capabilities, our talented workforce and the critical role we play in supporting the maritime industrial base. We appreciate the opportunity to engage with United States Marine Corps leadership and showcase how Austal USA continues to deliver advanced platforms in support of the warfighter. #AustalUSA #Shipbuilding #MobileAL #InnovativeOnLandExceptionalAtSea

  • From the very beginning, innovation has been at the core of Austal USA. Our journey in aluminum shipbuilding included our first aluminum car ferry—Lake Express. Delivered in June 2004, this early milestone marked several firsts for Austal USA, including the largest vessel built at our Mobile, Ala. yard at the time, the first high-speed vehicle-passenger ferry built at Austal USA, the first high-speed vehicle-passenger ferry to operate within the Continental U.S., and the first vessel of its kind to operate across Lake Michigan. More than two decades later, the vessel remains in active service. The Lake Express continues to provide seasonal high-speed ferry service between Milwaukee, WI and Muskegon, MI offering a 2.5 hour crossing with vehicle transport, modern amenities, and multiple daily departures. These achievements helped lay the foundation for the advanced, high-performance ships we build today, like the U.S. Navy’s Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF) in support of critical maritime missions. #ThrowbackThursday #AustalUSA #Shipbuilding #MobileAL #InnovativeOnLandExceptionalAtSea #AluminumInnovation #MaritimeMilestones

  • Austal USA was pleased to welcome Rear Admiral Derek Trinque, Director of Surface Warfare (N96), for the first time, to our Mobile, Alabama, shipyard today. During the visit, we highlighted Austal USA’s proven capacity and capability to build complex surface ships at scale, including executing multiple ship programs, under serial production, simultaneously. Our contracts include first-in-class vessels built by a highly skilled workforce using advanced modular construction. The tour also showcased our ability to build both combatant and auxiliary platforms while supporting the Navy’s evolving operational needs. Discussions with RADM Trinque also focused on our lines of business, including Austal USA Solutions and Advanced Technologies, workforce development initiatives, and material challenges impacting the maritime industrial base. We appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate Austal USA’s commitment and viability as a member of the maritime industrial base and our continued readiness to partner with vessel construction managers (VCMs) and the U.S. Navy as they evaluate shipyard capacity to support current and future shipbuilding efforts. #AustalUSA #Shipbuilding #MobileAL #InnovativeOnLandExceptionalAtSea
