About us
Our story began in September of 1993 when TASER International was founded by CEO Rick Smith with his brother Tom Smith. They consulted with Jack Cover, former NASA scientist and inventor of the original TASER® conducted energy weapons of the 1970s. Rick Smith was inspired to found the company after losing two high school football teammates who were shot and killed in a road rage incident. This experience led him to seek new technologies that would enable people to protect themselves without deploying lethal force in hopes of creating a bullet-less world. Today, Axon represents the entire network of devices, applications and people that is revolutionizing public safety around the world. Our mission is to protect life. We’re building the world’s largest and most trusted suite of public safety solutions. If you are seeking a career with purpose, we invite you to join us. In 2021 in the U.S., 1,118 people — 1,054 civilians and 64 officers — lost their lives in gun-related incidents between police and the public, according to leading data sources. In response, Axon is rallying partners around a “moonshot” goal to cut gun-related deaths between police and the public by 50% by 2033.

Protect the force. Empower the mission. That’s more than a statement. It’s the reason we showed up at #AUSA2025, and the thread running through every conversation, every hands-on demo and every partnership we strengthened this week. Over three days, defense leaders, operators and military personnel explored how integrated, field-ready technology is evolving to meet the complexity of today’s operational environments. From counter-UAS to robotics, connected vehicles and next-gen cameras, the clear focus was to give teams the tools to respond faster, act with precision and operate at scale. Attendees demoed in the TASER 10 Firing Bay, journeyed through the Dedrone by Axon VR Experience and stepped into the brand new Axon Eras 2: ‘The Walk’ AR experience, exploring Axon’s mission through past, present and future paralleled with public safety technology. On the floor they explored the GM ISV Defense vehicle outfitted with cutting-edge integrations like Fleet 3, Dedrone by Axon CUAS and Fotokite. And this year’s Salute to Service marked our fifth annual event, bringing together the defense community to honor our troops and recognize the extraordinary impact of the USO. In a world where the mission can shift in a moment, we’re committed to building systems that are ready anytime and anywhere the job demands.
