Baker McKenzie reposted this
After a high-impact 36 hours in Mumbai as part of the UK Prime Minister’s business delegation to India, the work continued on the plane home (although it was nice to get out of the suit and tie). Sharing reflections with other delegates at 40,000 feet, the collective positivity about the Indian market was palpable. The new UK-India FTA is an incredibly exciting opportunity for businesses. With around 99% of UK tariffs and 90% of Indian tariffs being liberalised, we are estimated to add a further £25 billion annually to bilateral trade between the two countries. But the FTA is a foundation – and it is now down to businesses to engage and get the UK-India corridor motoring. And of course, Baker McKenzie is excited to play its part as an advisor to many multinationals exploring this corridor. This trade mission was a perfect illustration of what can be achieved when you bring together the most senior members of Government, C-suite from leading businesses and chancellors from top universities in pursuit of growth. We often talk about the living bridge between the UK and India – the FTA enables us to nurture this living bridge whilst driving its rapid growth. Thank you to the Prime Minister (Keir Starmer) and the Secretary of State for Business and Trade (Peter Kyle), and their teams at Number 10 and the Department for Business and Trade, for inviting me to join other top UK business leaders on this trip. We were also the beneficiaries of excellent work and support from leading business organisations, including the Confederation of Business Industry (led by Rain Newton-Smith), British Chambers of Commerce (led by Shevaun Haviland), International Chamber of Commerce UK (led by Lord Karan Bilimoria), and UK India-Business Council (led by Richard Heald, OBE). A final thank you to the fantastic crew from British Airways for their exemplary care and service on the flights - Sean Doyle, they were wonderful ambassadors for your company.
