Nature-based solutions to help create a world of abundant biodiversity, climate resilience, justice, and clean water
About us
Mission: Restore The Earth And Inspire Ecological Stewardship. Our practice can best be defined as a blend of sound science, place-based design and ecological democracy. It is rooted in deep ecology with an underpinning that all species have equal rights, and that we have an ethical obligation to ensure that our actions do not interfere with their evolutionary potential. It is ingrained with the intent to design with ‘place’ and all of its complexity, diversity and life. And it is infused with a sense of compassion, fairness and equity for all peoples and their communities. Science forms the core of our practice. Science that is as informed by rigorous field investigations and meticulous research as it is from knowing the land and learning its stories. While the science provides us with the facts, stories provide the context to help us see things from a whole-systems perspective. Patterns, connections and relationships continually reveal themselves through stories, providing a rich tapestry of life that forms the basis of our design ethos.

"There really is quite an artistic touch to this, and I think our biologists on our team as well as our design engineers, they have a real heavy hand in shaping the artistry that is habitat restoration." - Val Chang, Hydro Projects Engineer, EWEB This summer, Biohabitats helped the Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) construct a complex habitat restoration project along a two-mile reach of the Upper McKenzie River, which included supplementing the gravel that some fish species use to build their spawning nests. As contractors on a team led by Wildish Group of Companies with Inter-Fluve, Blue Ridge Timber Cutting, and Columbia Helicopters , Biohabitats managed the helicopter placement of 2,000 tons of spawning gravel, direct placement of 500 tons of spawning gravel, 30 bundles of bushy treetops, and the mechanical tipping of 10 large trees with rootwads directly into the river. Watch this video from EWEB for a closer look https://lnkd.in/enHPhwjR, and learn more about our role on this project and more in the new issue of Leaf Litter https://lnkd.in/eBX6dWE5. An innovative and nature-based solution to shoreline stabilization and ecosystem conservation, how can living shoreline principles be scaled to regenerate estuarine ecosystems while advancing community resilience? Join us next week as Senior Restoration Ecologist Joe Berg , Senior Water Resources Engineer Kevin Dahms and Learning & Innovation Leader Christopher Streb answer this question in a session with Terry Doss from New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and Brett Berkley from GreenVest, LLC at the 2025 Living Shorelines Tech Transfer Workshop. This session will explore two ambitious projects—Baltimore’s Middle Branch Resiliency Initiative and Ohio's Sandusky Bay Initiative—that are redefining what’s possible when living shorelines are applied at scale. Hosted by Restore America's Estuaries , the workshop will be a unique platform to exchange knowledge with like-minded professionals in the field of coastal and estuarine habitat restoration. A significant opportunity for improvement to natural resources, stream restoration can restore lost floodplain function, enhance wetland hydrology and water quality, diversify degraded instream conditions, and increase density and diversity of aquatic life, amphibians, and birds. As practitioners we focus on the long-term restoration benefits to the site's natural resources. But are we also considering the impact of the carbon emissions during construction? Join Biohabitats Senior Restoration Ecologist and Practice Leader Joe Berg in the Climate Resilience & Adaptation technical breakout session at the National Stream Restoration Conference today! During his session, Joe will analyze the carbon emission impacts of several projects and demonstrate how our design decisions can dramatically influence the long-term benefits of an individual project. When watershed development, impoundment structures, and a dam breach resulted in erosion issues at the confluence of the Chagrin River and the East Branch of the Chagrin River, there was cause for a large-scale river restoration. The Chagrin River Watershed Partners, Inc. joined forces with the City Of Willoughby , Ohio Department of Natural Resources , Western Reserve Land Conservancy and Biohabitats to combat sediment and nutrient reductions and improve aquatic passage and habitat restoration. At the National Stream Restoration Conference today, join Biohabitats Senior Water Resources Engineer Brett Long, P.E. in the Dam Removal & Aquatic Passage technical breakout session when he discusses this project and the ways in which our restoration techniques deviated from typical applications.
