For Nicholas, it was a stiff neck. That was his first symptom before being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive blood cancer. And a poor prognosis… The day was sunny. Beautiful. Blue skies and a few clouds. A paradox for how he felt. Dreary. Dark. How dare the sun still shine? The first few hours were surreal. Like watching himself on TV. Numb to what was unfolding around him. But without the immediate treatment, Nicholas would die. Having reached remission and also relapsed, Nicholas is living with cancer. He recalls, "life after cancer can be just as difficult as life with cancer." And he lives one monthly blood test at a time. Every cold now comes with a little panic. Planning for the future is different—not like it used to be. Blood cancer takes a toll on your body when it's there, and haunts your mind when it's not. A reminder: Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s moving forward anyway. Nicholas shares the raw, honest, unflinching, and deeply human experience of blood cancer. It isn’t just the physical hardship of acute myeloid leukemia and the spiral of its treatment, but also the psychological terrain that follows—the quiet, persistent dread that doesn’t get discussed in pamphlets or discharge notes. We won’t sugarcoat it or help descend into hopelessness... It is in the way you can reframe courage – not as an absence of fear, but moving forward in spite of it – is powerful. You don’t have to face a blood cancer diagnosis alone. At the Charlotte ROVAL 400, we were able to shine a light on pediatric blood cancer and the kids at the heart of our Dare to Dream Project. ❤️ Our honored heroes, William, Penelope, Natiya, and Wren drew some illustrations showcasing what brings them joy, and they were featured on a custom Valvoline Global Operations paint scheme for William Byron’s car No. 24. 🏎️✨ Thanks to Valvoline Global Operations and Hendrick Motorsports for giving our honored heroes an experience of a lifetime and for this opportunity to bring blood cancer awareness to families everywhere. “My passion for helping the community has led me to volunteer. This passion, coupled with a desire to make a real difference in the lives of those affected by blood cancers, led me to Blood Cancer United. There, I've deepened my understanding of blood cancer, honed my communication and leadership skills, and experienced tremendous personal and professional growth. As a leader, I work alongside an incredible team of community health workers, significantly expanding the reach of educational programs within Latino communities.” We need more passionate volunteers like Luz. She is a dedicated community health worker who draws strength from her Mexican roots. Her commitment to service has led her to impact countless lives affected by blood cancers at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), now known as Blood Cancer United. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with us by exploring our Spanish resources on blood cancer education, support, and access to care. “I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) when I was 18 years old, the summer before I was supposed to start college. Instead, I spent six months receiving treatment on a clinical trial at CHOP. I was fortunate to have access to outstanding, cutting-edge cancer care and have a good outcome. This experience inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field. I’m now a physician-scientist finishing my oncology fellowship. I’m passionate about advancing the field of oncology through research and advocacy.” Robert, a resilient physician-scientist who turned his blood cancer diagnosis into a career dedicated to advancing oncology. Inspired by his personal experience and participation in a clinical trial, he has become a passionate advocate for research and improved patient care. Join us in supporting breakthroughs for blood cancer patients like Robert! Together, we can create a brighter future for those affected by blood cancers. “Life as a survivor ignited a fire within me to advocate for others. Each moment that I commit to volunteering for Blood Cancer United is an opportunity to empower and inspire those navigating their experience. I want others to see that, while cancer is a hardship, it can also spark a light within us that illuminates the path for others, creating hope along the way.” Kenya was diagnosed with two blood cancers: multiple myeloma (MM) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). But they don’t define her. She also loves spending time with her family, doing yoga, giving back to others who are in need, dancing, traveling, and reading. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is now Blood Cancer United, still the world's leading organization focused solely on blood cancer research, support, and advocacy.
